Paxil or Prozac--Success and Failures?

Posted by clubfitter on October 12, 2007, at 19:28:57

Going on either Paxil or Prozac Monday to help with depression. Currentyl on Geodon and Lamictal. Curious to hear what others have experienced on either of these drugs, including side effects. Thanks in advance!

I had really good success on Paxil, although my main problem was unrelenting anxiety that led to depression. It worked great for a number of years, and I had no problems with it with the exception of initial effects of increased anxiety and stomach problems for the first few weeks. The side effects went away, though, and it really worked well. I eventually went down to a miniscule dose for a year or so and then weaned off of it. A couple of years later when I tried it again, it did not work for me.

I tried Prozac, but that trial was short-lived. It made me suicidal (which I had never really been before) and I was told to stop it. I took it for two weeks before stopping.

Hope that helps.

Only low doses for me paxil at l0mg with lopressor and xanax took about three months til I could get out of the hammock. But then okay til off it about 2 years later. Prozac when first came out first day felt great but wasn't depressed then just some anxiety, second day anxiety, third day sheer panic all day and took three days of extra xanax to come down. Pdoc at the time wanted me to take it every three days at 20mg only available that way I said no and that was it. Phillipa

I've taken each of them for a couple of years at a time, and both were fairly successful for me. The Prozac was always in combination with another drug, so it's harder to say if it was as helpful. It was certainly easier in terms of adverse effects though.

Paxil worked, but had a lot of problems for me. I was far too sedated, had to nap daily, wasn't able to do everything I needed to do, couldn't exercise, and caused a huge amount of weight gain. (Eating disorder, so I went from underweight to overweight.) I went off it after two years because the emotional blunting was just too much. I couldn't feel much of anything, and when a friend's son committed suicide and I couldn't even cry about it, that was the end of it for me. The sexual side effects were pretty annoying, too.

Prozac also caused a good deal of apathy and emotional blunting, which is why I've stopped that, too. It also caused some weight gain, but not nearly as much. Otherwise, once I got through the initial GI problems, it was pretty friendly.

My favorite SSRI is Zoloft, though -- easiest in terms of side effects, and minimal weight gain, if any.

Good luck.

I was on on paxil for 9 years. Initially it helped me to gain some of my life back again but towards the end of the nine years wasn't doing a great deal for me. Side effects were minimal for me. Have not tried prozac but my brother is on that and thinks it does wonders for his depression.
