pharmacy says they no longer make ensam?

Posted by reese7194 on September 21, 2007, at 21:08:49

i've been on ensam for a long time. don't know how many months on the hightest dosage. called my pharmacy put in order for re-fill. called back a day later saying they no longer make this drug.

1. is this true
2. if it is - is it legal to cut someone off without notice of a medication.

There is nothing on the Bristol-Myer Squibb website about discontinuing production of the drug. Almost certainly your pharmacy is mistaken.

My pharmacy told me that they could not get Ritalin to fill my prescription.

That was as true as your pharmacy's fiction about EMSAM.

The Walgreen's where my husband takes prescriptions has had that sort of thing go on. My Costco pharmacy did the Ritalin thing to me. (The old pharmacy manager wouldn't dispense scheduled drugs, for the most part. The new manager even said he would try to keep my Concerta on hand, so that there wouldn't be more week-long delays in getting it.)

If this was a chain pharmacy, it's worth calling another store in the chain to ask if they're no longer carrying it, or if this was a mistake. My guess, though, is that whoever you spoke with made a mistake altogether.

Good luck.

This happened to me with Marplan in 1994. I had been on it with very stable results and then it was yanked out from under me precipitating another depression. So it can happen that quickly if and when a pharmaceutical company decides to stop making a drug because of a "business decision" (AKA poor sales).

I wouldn't be surprised based on what was being said about Emsam's costs and the poor sales associated with it. Hopefully if and when they do something like this notice is given ahead of time for adjustment but in my case, there was no other med that worked as well as Marplan did back then. Marplan has been rereleased now (10 years later)and I tried it with poor results so there's no saying the reformulation will work like the original med since usually another manufacturor is involved and the formula changes and never works the same way.

This is what happened with Nardil and it works very differently now then when manufactured by the original company.

Stargazer

P.S. I have two full boxes of Emsam 6 which I was on but I'm now n Nardil.

Heh, but the price had gone up to $529 from $511. Inflation I suppose. (thanks Bernanke)
