Hiya,
I'm planning on ordering this book you recommended but I have to say I'm slightly sceptical and a bit put off by the amount of self help books this Matthew Mckay has already published (I know negative thinking :-)) but he seems to be milking it for everything it's worth.
I'm also put off by anyone who publishes a book on eye movement therapy for mood disorders.
I'll give it a go though and sorry to be negative about it.

> DeniseHi Denise,
I did not Google McKay, and I was not aware that he is also a proponent of the EMDR treatments.
I understood that EMDR was primarily for people who have experienced pretty severe trauma, and I can't say that I have been in that unfortunate boat. I guess it is not unexpected that once these authors have a successful following, that they will keep the products coming. The "Effective Problem Solving" workbook is a tool my therapist recommended, and it forms the basic framework for her work with me. I didn't really think of it as a "self-help" book. It's a tool for me to get the brain moving in a different direction, and to force me to write down thoughts I would just as soon ignore.
When you wrote that you had to wait a whole year to get started with CBT, I suggested it as something to consider using on your own as a way to get you started in the meantime, but ONLY if it was something that appealed to you. Please don't feel that I am encouraging you to try something that you are fundamentally against. I would not want someone doing that with me!
Do you still have yourself in the queue for CBT in a year?
Are you still looking for a different pharmacological treatment or an augmentor for the Zyprexa?
I know that you are currently going through quite a lot of discomfort and I wish that something could help ease those awful symptoms for you ASAP!
Please write again if you think I can help in any way. I am thinking about you over there!

Hi Janet,
Thanks for thinking of me and sorry I know that you weren't trying to push this book down my throat.
I guess if I were in a better frame of mind I'd be less cynical and suspicious :-)
Thanks for offering your opinions and help. I am due to see a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist in October so I can hammer it out with them :-) I can tell them that I think what they are doing is a waste of time (for me, that is) and then they can challenge me.
I'd love it to work I really would but take last Saturday night I got ready to go out, really wanting to make the effort and then I ended up lying on my male friends bed (not in a sexual way) in a depressed, hurting, exhausted kind of way)at 8.30pm. I wasn't too bad during the day though I have to say. So I really don't know how CBT can help with that sort of thing.
