Campral (acamprosate)

Posted by Michael Bell on August 16, 2007, at 12:49:58

Hi,

I was just wondering whether anyone who has tried Campral notices any anti-anhedonia and/or humor-improving effects of this medication. Thanks.

I never ended up trying it because about 50 different people I spoke to in AA said it was a waste of time and money, but hey, everyone is different and if it's working for you that's fantastic. Maybe it's just the real you re-emerging, but don't stop taking it because of what I have said. If it's working keep taking it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I took it for a year and half and found that it had a profound effect on my anxiety with relation to being able to stay away from drinking. It was a godsend. So in that sense it improved my humour immensely.

Michael are you using AA as a support tool along with the Campral? Good luck in your sobriety too.

Hi, I'm not using it for alcohol abuse actually. I am experimenting with it for Social Phobia, since recent research implicates glutamate in this disorder.

Michael, as I mentioned above, I found that it had a profound effect upon me with respect to lessening the anxiety I felt about where that next drink was going to come from. It seems that I spent ALL my time planning it - what route to drive home so I'd go past a liquor store where I wasn't a regular customer, how quickly I could drop my things once inside the door in order to properly prepare the drink (I had to have the martini shaker, olives, and chilled glass to the ready) - it just consumed me. Taking Campral really removed all the anxiety with the preoccupation.

I hope that you're able to give it a try, and that it's a successful for you. The therapeautic dosage was pretty high - 2 x 333mg pills, 3 times a day; I maintained that dosage for a full 6 months before slowly and gradually tapering down with my doctor's OK. I'm a week away from my 2nd year anniversary of continuous sobriety (yay!).

best wishes,
ClearSkies
