Does anyone know of any stimulants that doctors are willing to prescribe. I live in the US.
I realized that certain diet/energy pills that contain ephedrine help me with focus/energy/motivation. However, they may not be so safe. Is there anything i can suggest to my doc that would accomplish the same thing?
I have certain ADD symptom, though i'm not sure i have ADD and my doctor didn't even entertain the idea the one time i brought it up. However, FOCUS, energy, motivation are very lacking and i feel something has to give before it's my job.
thanks in advance,
SB

For me, being honest about my findings has been a better plan when it comes to making treatment decisions. I'm thinking if there is a disorder like ADD found, you will have options that are monitored for the best outcome. There are RX options. Provigil has been mentioned. In the US, unless things have recently changed, it's use is generally as a narcolepsy treament and it's usually very pricey if one uses it for off-label use.... that being said, there are other options.
I hope you have a good talk with your doc.
Good Luck.

If a doctor genuinely believes you have ADD (it sounds to me like you do), he/she will likely prescribe a stimulant similar to Ephedrine--if he/she thinks you are not an abuse risk. Still, it depends on the doctor. Some can be very wary of those drugs, and some don't like prescribing them for adults. Also, though I agree it's good to be honest with your doc, if you push too hard in asking for stimulants, they may not want to give them to you, because they might think you have an unhealthy reason for wanting it. Might even be best to avoid mentioning them by name. If you describe your symptoms in some detail--low energy, distractibility, difficulty focusing, all that, your provider might see for himself why a stimulant (concertal/ritalin/methylphenidate, or adderall/dexedrine/dexamphetamine) or else provide something similar that might also be useful. Not that I'm suggesting you be dishonest, just careful.
Keep in mind that all these meds have similar risks to ephedra, though they're probably smaller ones. Also, sometimes coffee, tea, or fish-oil (espcially EPA-heavy fish oil, which you can get from a natural foods or vitamin store) might be helpful with the same stuff, without resorting to getting a prescription.
Just my two-cents. I'm no expert.
Best of luck,
