Do They Have Meds For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Posted by Phillipa on July 18, 2007, at 21:45:03

I was told after my lymes disease I might have chronic fatigue syndrome and it's one of my diagnosis's. Do they have meds to treat it if you're anxious and hasimotos ? Love Phillipa

I don't think so, PJ.

It's more the nutritional alternative angle.

I think the only thing I've read about (as far as Ad's go) is Effexor or Cymbalta.

My mom also has fibromyalgia and she is on Effexor XR. She constantly tells me how much more energy she has and how less achy she feels.

The Zoloft is helping my fibro pain but it isn't doing a thing for my energy.

A neurologist told me that if you have Hashimoto's , Lyme's disease or are hypothyroid, then you do NOT have CFS. Your symptoms are from those diseases.

But, I see both CFS and FMS as multi-etiology syndromes. So many diagnoses have fatigue that is chronic or pain as symptoms, that you need to rule out many to see if you're left with true Chronic FAtigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia. I'd even venture to surmise that if an SSRI helps someone, then you might be seeing symptoms caused by anxiety, depression or whatever. I've had specialists tell me that there is a core of patients, however, who are not helped by many of the so-called FMS/CFS meds and these might be those that truly have these syndromes. Perhaps FMS/CFS meds that are partially effective are working on anxiety/depression symptoms that accompany FMS/CFS.

My fatigue and symptoms seem like either hypothyroidism or adrenal fatigue. Lab tests say otherwise. But there are receptor issues and hypothalmus issues "upstream" that may result in an attenuated thyroid or adrenal effect. CRH augmentation is being looked at for CFS and maybe even FMS.

One day I believe they will be able to subtype these syndromes or there may turn out to be more than one syndrome at play.

In the meantime, I can't tolerate Provigil, psychostimulants, or any med that is stimulating or has an SSRI effect. That eliminates most CFS/FMS meds.

I'll be seeing a CFS/FMS specialist in October. I hope he can bring something new to the table, and I believe he may. He looks at cytokine levels, tilt table testing, heart rate variability, etc., which most community doctors do not. I hope that I can post some good news after my appointment.

In the meantime, hang in there and RELAX.

Zatar thanks for the post. But how do you relax with benzos that you've taken for 35 years and everyone says I've built tolerance. My pdoc said the anxiety drains my energy. My babblemail is open. But seriously what can I do? You're right the ssri's and snri's dont work for me either. Love Phillipa

When I was pregnant and off all drugs I had to work really hard to control my anxiety. One day I went to the midwife thinking I was in premature labor (my son had just entered drug rehab and I'd spent the day in the hospital with my daughter, who got a full spine and head MRI). The midwife gave me an herbal mixture called "Smooth Transitions" by Wish Garden herbs. It is three herbs -- Motherwort Leaf, Oatseed & Skullcap leaf. I was quite hesitant, but I knew my current state of anxiety was harmful to my baby. It was the best. One (or maybe two) doses somehow flipped a switch in my brain and I mellowed out for days. A better mellow than any of the pills I'd taken. I bought more, and used it a few more times before I gave birth and it was always a godsend. But oddly, after I gave birth it did not work nearly as well. I'm back on my ADs / Stims / Benzos as-needed and they all work well enough. (I do not mix the herbs with my meds).

My idea is that if the "regular" meds don't work for you, maybe your hormones etc. are in a place where these herbs might work. My experience was that you don't need to take them for weeks to find out. With just three herbs, it wasn't hard for me to do a little research in order to feel like I almost certainly wasn't poisoning myself or my baby. (The company also has a formulation with more herbs designed for anxiety).

Good luck,
Leslie

Of course you still have hormones. Everyone does. Yours just aren't like they used to be.

I had a total hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy (tubes removed) when I was quite young.

I've been on HRT in the form of Vivelle Dot patches 0.1mg every 3 days. I tried, but could not tolerate any other form of hormone replacement therapy.

Now, nearly 20yrs later, I'm having bad hot flashes/flushes, increased fatigue (physical symptoms) and increased anxiety.

I believe I've reached a tolerance with my Xanax dosage. I don't want to increase it. I don't think my Pdoc would allow it either.

Think my brain is telling my body 'it's time for menopause'. Think it's totally clueless to the absence of organs.

Alternatives may be very helpful.

My prob' is finding the $ to purchase and try them. They are so expensive!

Hi. I don't know if this is the sort of thing you're looking for but you might consider Provigil (modafinal). It is a mild stimulant with extremely low abuse potential. For me, it has done wonders in negating my chronic fatigue. It is also an efficacious mood brightener. It's also quite expensive if you do not have insurance. Maybe consider asking your doctor for samples so you can try and see if it works for you. Good Luck!

Does it up your anxiety if your benzos you've become tolerant to? Do you need an ad as they make me more anxious? Would it stable me out no anxiety no depression. Thanks Phillipa

Hey Phillipa ... what about tryptophan? I'm trying to learn more about it. I've not tried it, as I've not tried Armour thyroid either.
