I read several messages on here about this subject and I have to tell you my story. My husband died 6 years ago from cirrhosis of the liver. He was 57 years old. He never drank a drop in his life and he never smoked. He was very much over weight. His weight was around 300 pounds. Over the years he had worn the cartilage away from his hip bone and he had nerve grinding nerve. This was very painful and he took Tylenol. By the handfuls. I tried to tell him that he was taking too many and that the bottle said to not take as much as he was. He would not see a doctor until it became too late. When the doctor did the liver biopsy they discovered his liver damage was from the acute acetaminophen overdosage.I told the doctor about how much Tylenol he took and my husband got very upset and said if Tylenol was that bad why the TV commercials didn’t say so. He was relying only from this information that the Tylenol would just kill his pain not him. He died 2 and 1/2 years later.

My condolescenses to you. Why didn't your husbands doctor prescribe a med for the pain? I agree not enough info is given about over the counter meds and tylenol is liver toxic. Love Phillipa

I'm sorry to hear about the loss. I try to avoid tylenol at all costs...considering all the other meds especially lithium that may have adverse effects on my liver. I stick with advil. I don't think enough people know how serious it can be especially if the pain is chronic.

I am very sorry to hear about your loss...my condolences. However, "by the handfuls" is really an extreme. I don't think that this should necessarily discourage people from taking acetaminophen as recommended or prescribed by a physician. Peace...Saturn.

Anything in massive amounts will mess things up. I'm sorry about your loss.
My husband took Tylenol by the handfuls for awhile, but he decided that was a bad idea and went to the doctor (culminating in him having hand surgery). I'm sure it wasn't good for his liver, but I'm sure the fact that he has stopped (and only did it for about 6 months) is a great help to his liver recuperating.
People shouldn't be afraid to use Tylenol or any other medication because of what can happen in case of overdose. Most medicines, when taken as directed, are okay. Technically, the best thing would be if we could all live without any medicines at all, and be perfectly okay. :D
