Hey all... thanks for encouragement to stay on Parnate... I most definitely will give it a fair shot... I wrote originally to say I was disillusioned because I thought this was an "energizing" drug... may just be me but not hardly. It's extremely sedating so far.
The dry mouth and insomnia I knew were coming and will live with... but here's the strange thing... I have to urinate constantly... at least 5 x a night, every ninety minutes on the dot last night. This is really tiresome and I hope it abates. I don't even know where it's all coming from, I don't drink that much liquid! please let me know if this happened to any of you. Other weird Parnate side effect - it apparently cures smoker's cough! I have pretty bad smokers cough which I totally deserve after 20+ years smoking cigarettes :( it is GONE. Wow, that's quite unexpected.

Wow, that's quite unexpected.>>Can't address the smoker's cough since I've never smoked, but the frequent urination is definitely a side effect. In my case, it's diminished quite a bit since I started it at the end of April.
And why would you ever think that an MAOI is energizing? After all, it's supposed to diminish anxiety and drugs that do that are by nature always sedating.
Strangely enough though, I've had four cups of very strong coffee today and it's 5 pm and I'm not fatigued yet. Yesterday, I drank a similar amount of caffeine and fell asleep while driving.
Perhaps it was being out in the sun (which does tend to make you fatigued, regardless of whether you're on any meds). But the fatigue can crawl up on you very quickly which is why it's best to be extra vigilant while driving.
Also, I haven't experienced the dry mouth at all, and I'm on 80 mgs (I went up 20 mgs yesterday).

Nardil pretty much eliminated my migraines, which was an unexpected bonus effect. I think I've had one or two since I started it 3 or 4 years ago. Strange but good.
I hope the frequent urination calms down. Sounds like a hassle.

I thought parnage was energizing due to lots of reading I've done about it... even dr. said parnate was energizing, nardil not... seems strange a sedating drug would be considered helpful for atypical depression... believe me you're tired and get too much sleep with that kind of depression, you don't need to "calm down" or "rest." (I'm taking it for major depression, not anxiety) Those were my thoughts... thanks Julie

Parnate is supposed to be energizing because among other things, one of its metabolites is similar to an amphetamine.
I didn't find it energizing-- quite the reverse-- but many do.
The urination thing should taper off-- I think it has something to do with PEA, which is a subtance that also is part of the metabilism (I think)-- I forget what it is-- but it usually causes symptoms like that, as I recall. Probably, though, it won't last forever.

I think we've discussed this before - MAOIs are often stimulating (probably because they shore up noradrenaline and dopamine). Nardil is sedating mainly due to the action of the metabolite PEH (phenylethylidenehydrazine), which elevates levels of GABA in the caudate-putamen and nucleus accumbens. Nardil is unique among MAOIs in having this effect, and not all MAOIs are anxiolytic by any means.

missjulie,
I had to go off Parnate because of a rare autohypertensive problem. My blood pressure would spike and I would get a splitting headache even though I hadn't eaten anything or taken any other medications. I never get headaches so this was really weird. It took eight weeks for the daytime somnolence to abate on 80mg of Parnate. Seemed like I had to take a nap every afternoon. Hang in there, it will more than likely go away.
Good Luck,

oh, you are not imagining it
i was worried i would get sick on parnate because i was not able to take any of the meds for a chronic bronchial problem
also i had no aches or pains, even when i was working out hard
must be an anti-inflammatory

I agree,i also feel that although not to the EXTENT nardil is mentioned, that however parnate if archived to recent vs long ago posts there is a differeance to its energizing effects. Was the drug toned down some, could we ever actualy know for sure?
Also even with caffiene or actualy the addition of caffiene i have actualy feel asleep on parnate more readly, however it is a nice anti depressant sleep as i wake up feeling ok,so its not a big problem.
Just goes to show how the brain is obviously not so 1,2,3 like working on a car as we are wishing it were.
p.s caffiene tabs are pure caffiene, coffe grind has sedating properties which is why more people get anxious without morning coffee then say morning mountain due.Coffee is both a stimulant and the grind produces a calming effect.People might want to visit there local 7 11 for awake tabs which in various brands are usualy simply nothing more than pure caffiene 250 mg no inactive ingredients.

Steel,
You may be on to something about the stimulating effects of Parnate now vs years ago. Seven years ago I had a trial of Parnate and I could not even drink coffee because the Parnate had such a stimulating effect. It would just buzz me out.During my most recent trial that just ended, the somnolence effect was really intense; mostly in the late afternoon. It is surely possible that my brain has changed that much over the last seven years, spent mostly on Nardil plus trials with many other ADs. But the energizing side effects of Parnate are not what I remember them to be.
Has anybody else had this kind of an experience?

I too had the nightly pee thing. One night was ridiculous, it felt like I had to go 20+ times. It went away though, as did the spontaneously feeling frigid cold (that's a weird one too). Another undesirably side effect is a really stubborn form of acne. Yuck! Can't wait for it to dissapate. FYI in my weaning down period, I've been taking the entire dose in the am and daytime fatigue and insomnia are no longer an issue. Perhaps it's cause my body is finally acclimated, but I would suggest giving this dose time a try to anyone suffering w/ these intolerable side effects.

I thought I was the only one the pee thing happened to and was going crazy... last night I didn't drink anything after 6pm (not fun at all with the dry mouth) and only had to go 3x once I got in bed. Big improvement. I have the "cold" thing too but as it's full-on summer in So Cal it's actually a pleasant novelty (I usually run hot and complain endlessly about heat.) finally, I sympathize re: acne... nothing so far on Parnate for which I'm very grateful, because I got a case of acne I'll never forget on a very short lamictal trial a couple years ago. not rash, horrible acne, after a lifetime of good skin. these drugs are sooo weird. best julie

Which brand/generic did you take this time? I took the GSK generic and it had a definite stimulant effect. That was at doses of 80-120mg though.

>Well what had me thinking was i remeber approx 5 years ago when i first heard of parnate.I began to scan groups like crazy.
The med seemed to have a overall similiar agreed description, which was that it was a very very stimulating medication.I often heard the possable amphetmaine relation a lot too, this was the MAIN story of parnate.
This was also in archived posts at THAT time.I remeber one in particular because i experianced the same.
I believe it was from a response on the OLD REMEDYFIND that said being on parnate,a major plus was to wake with a anti depressant effect in the pit of your stomach, like morning adrenaline from the get go.I remeber distinctivly due to the job at that time that id wake and id have that go go in my gut upon opening my eyes.I remebered i could wait out my first dose quite a while, right until i left for work, where as now sometimes i wish it were later in the morning as i feel like a druggie wanting badly to take my first dose.
But in a nutshell, being thankful one thing i still have is a golden brick memory, and i swear i remeber the general, overall reaction youd find researching parnate back then is simply not the same youd find today.

Steel Jedi Quintal...
Obviously I cannot speak to what Parnate used to be as I have just been on it for 10 days... but I totally concur about checking other user reports, I read hundreds plus every "official" article on tranylcypromine on Pub Med, in journals, psych drug books etc. 95% of them specifically said, energy, amphetamine-like rush, psychic energizer, get up and go. One that really stuck in my mind cautioned users to be careful exercising, because people on Parnate get such a rush of energy and feel so good they run out and overdo it after years on the couch. HA! Depression made me tired; this is exhaustion.
I have to think the formula may be different?? I saw tons of groups about people's lives who had been ruined when Nardil changed formula.
Anyway I'll give it a good 2 months but exhaustion was NOT was I needed; all this info/user reports led me to expect a completely different experience. I'll see what doc says but he's not a fan of MAOIs, not much experience.
best Julie

Hi Q,
Par Pharmaceuticals manufactured the generic I took. Pink round pill with a K on one side and 250 on the other. Though these generics are supposed to be equivalent to the parent drug; obviously coatings, etc. are different. I was taking 80 to 100mg at max. I should have been really buzzing.
Thanks,
Jedi

I've only been at 10 mg. for a couple of weeks and find my focus much better than when I was on Lexapro..I can actually mow the lawn without wandering off aimlessly..going up to 20 starting tomorrow..I just hope the dreaded hypotension doesn't hit again, cause Parnate sure brought me out of a deep depression a few years ago..and after another poop out with Zoloft and Lexapro..I'm feeling better and more optimistic than I have for ages..
I even asked my pdoc if I could return to work..but too soon to tell yet..
