I don't know anything definitive, but when I say I'm experiencing anxiety, it generally has an element of fear or dread to it which isn't present when I say I'm experiencing agitation. Agitation is usually more about restlessness, being unable to settle down, or sometimes angry and unable to get myself onto another track, or just being -- well, agitated...

Anxiety, though, is definitely related to adrenaline for me. Lots and lots of adrenaline...

That's one thought on the differences...

Yeah, agitation is has a restless quality to it and is closely related to anger and irritability. Anxiety is more tension and fear, it can be quite exhilarating in manageable amounts.

I sometimes think anxiety is where the tension/adrenaline is rising, which turns into agitation and irritability as it wears off. Much like with stimulants where you get tense and anxious on the way up and irritable and agitated as they're wearing off. I guess the stimulants are mimicking the effect of adrenaline?

oh ya. although benzos can be used to treat either. my personal experience:
anxiety: adrenaline running for no reason, on edge, stomach has the butterflies with little appetite.
agitation: irritated & annoyed, very unpleasant.

Well I guess I have agitation then. What's good for that? As the benzos don't work as well or maybe a different one? Love Phillipa

Good point, though the best results are probably obtained by combing them both to make an upper downer combo - the benzo to counteract the agitation and the stimulant to counteract the cognitive impairment and poor attention span. Calm alertness is the initial result, but then there's always the demon tolerance to contend with. Lamictal is supposedly helpful for delaying tolerance to some drugs, especially opiates. I suppose it could help with benzo and stimulant tolerance as well.

Still have lamictal from last summer maybe the excess salivation would go away and help the benzos work better. What do you think? Love Phillipa

Probably not - it's more to prevent tolerance than an augmenter, but it can augment some antidepressants.

Lamictal doesn't seem to be very anxiolytic, in fact it tends to make people feel irritable and agitated. I couldn't take it without a benzo for that reason.

benzos can help me with anxiety but once i am agitated to a point of easily triggered anger i am a lost cause
if i chew a half-ambien the hostility ebbs a bit
then i get a headache
what does the ambien do that xanax cannot?
