Three years ago I lost my sense of taste. And nothing I can taste is this related to depression? I read on the internet that it is and that zinc may help restore it is this true? Love Phillipa

Could it be related to your thyroid?
I find this symptom of yours very puzzling. No Dr. has offered you an explanation for it. What could make you lose your sense of taste?
If I get the chance I'll do some research.
Peace,
Kaye

Did they do any neurological testing? Did they say anything at all as to why they think you are experiencing it?
It's awful feeling blown off by docs for something distressing. And it sounds like it's a quality of life issue, too. :(

Definitely a quality of life issue. No neurological testing but I've seen neurologists at the centers they put substances on you tonue and as if sweet, salty, bitter, and the one I can't remember. And they have you try and smell things and a 24hour urine. And then say it's a virus that attacked your neurons in your nose. And take theophlline to stimulate the regrowth of the neurons didn't do that as it's such a stimulating med for people who can't breath. Google Robert Henkin of DC taste and smell clinic and the Wake Forrest guy left and opened his own clinic name Demitri Petroski. Love Phillipa ps the petrovski may have a v not sure I thing I will google taste and smell centers and see if they still have websites.

Phillipa,
I remember when I took certain antidepressants, this time round and I was feeling more anxious on them I had absolutely no taste, everything I ate had no taste whatsoever, it was like eating cardboard. So maybe it is a symptom of depression or anxiety.
I've also noticed when my depression has lifted in the past I have a much stronger sense of smell, infact all of my senses are more acute.

Sorry for the delay in responding. So it sounds like you did get a diagnosis and a treatment plan. I'm not sure I understand why you didn't try the theophyline. Was it too stimulating for you, or were you worried it would be and didn't try it? And it's true it's used for folks with respiratory problems, but like most drugs there are other uses as well.

GG I had experience taking care of patients on theophylline and they were miserable and so anxious it was unbelievable. Google the side effects of theophlline compares to an aminoplline drip when the respirtory problem is bad enough for admission to the hospital. It's a respiratory med. Love Phillipa

Were you prescribed the same dose as those you saw in distress? And I'm aware of the side effects and what it's used for. My dog takes it for chronic allergic bronchitis. I took it as a kid for asthma, and I hated it. It made me feel really jittery, even at half the dose, so I can understand your worry. But like all meds, not everyone has the same experience.
So I'm guessing you believed the risk of side effects outweighed any possible benefit? That's always a tough choice to make about meds. Were there any other treatment options offered at the time?

GG first there was no sort of thought that it would work it just might. The first was to take prednisone for two weeks and I did. I took the theophlline for two weeks and with my anxiety decided against it as the taste and smell centers were used to people with nasal problems and allergies and I tested no to them. Also sjournes an autoimmune disorder can cause it was tested and negative. See since the lymes disese was untreated no one knows how many years I have low levels of lots of auto immune disease. One I found out about this summer autoimmune hepatitis levels too low to treat. My siste same with lupus I'm negative to that. But do a google on autoimmune diseases . I never knew there were so many. On one site I found loss of taste. Couldn't find it again. It's horrible I hate eating or shopping or people talking about food. I eat to live that's it. Love Phillipa ps only thing is small possibility that zinc at l00mg three times a day might help but it says up to two years and now its three. Lar posted it on health.
This is the end of the thread.
