bi-polar

Posted by needhelp on May 23, 2007, at 15:16:48

My husband and I just found out that he is bipolar and has a psych. appointment in 2 weeks for the diagnosis and to get proper meds started. It has been a tough year getting to this point but at least now there is hope. I just need as much advice I can get from all of you to help me thru this time and how to deal with his moods and anger periods. He had been on Lexapro and it was not helping plus weed and beer/alcohol. I am sure all that made the last year even harder for us both. The gen. doc now has him starting with Zyprexa 5 mg until the psych gives him another prescription. Please hit me with advice as I don't want our marriage to go down the tubes.

NH,
You wrote,[...a tough year...there is hope....how to deal with..moods amd anger...Lexapro..not helping..plus (intoxicants)..made ..harder...start Zyprexa...don't want..marriage to go down..tubes...]
Your desire to have your marriage to stay intact is a bright star to follow to navigate around the tubes. That focus could help you IMO to stay on a safe course.

Do you know if it's bipolar I or II? I'm bipolar II and have found help with a combo of Zyprexa, Lamictal, Cymbalta, and Clonazepam.

This combo has worked for me for 3-4 years. It isn't perfect but it's as close as I've been in 25 years on meds--note...misdiagnosed with just major depression for 21 of those years.

I'm not saying this combo is for everyone and hopefully he won't have to be on so many meds but, for myself, I take what works.

The Zyprexa at 5 mg is a good start.

As far as marriage goes, I'll leave that to the married people to answer.

Zyprexa a major kicker. Geodon and Abilify will work better for depression. Even 2.5 mg of Zypreza truns me into a zombie. 19mg of Abilify takes getting used to but activating rather than deadening
