I had to pay $26 for two Provigil pills?

Posted by rina on April 1, 2007, at 1:12:30

Get this!! My pdoc calls in a script for Provigil for me now that he sees it's working. The Pharmacy says my pdoc has to fill out a pre authorization for necessity form for my insurance first, then they will fill it? For now I have to pay for it? 26 dollars for two 200mg pills?? Omg!! When did Blue Shield start that? I wonder if they will even pay for it? So if 26dollars for two, I'll need a second job for a months supply.

Provigil is outrageously expensive, and a lot of insurance companies won't cover it for mental illness - just narcolepsy.

Of course, that was several months ago when I tried it.

Just in case, be sure that your provider writes the script for "excess sleepiness" or something like that.

Try "ideopathic hypersomnia" ("ideopathic" meaning, we don't know what causes it-- or as maddie said, 'excessive daytime sleepiness") if you need to have a dx to get the provigil covered.

It is absurdly expensive-- always has been. The newer ADs seem to be so overpriced-- like they're just extras, not necessities. you know. I mean, we aren't dying from it or anything. So they say.

The price is outrageous. I'm looking into ordering some generics from Canada online, which are much, much, cheaper.

I know it's not a reality yet, but there are six tentative approvals in the FDA database for generics of this drug......Cephalon, manufacturer of the Provigil brand, is litigating right now, but they're probably going to lose, and then the gates will open. Cephalon tried to get the patent extended for a new indication of the med for ADHD, but it was rejected by the FDA.

In Canada, Shire markets the same drug as Alertec, for much less cost.

If it makes you feel any better, I went through the exact same thing, with blue shield. They did finally approve it, and the approval was good for one year. At that time, it will have to be resubmitted. Their approval took about a week after it was submitted.

Good luck

Chris
