Is Seroquel as sedating + depressing as Trazadone?

Posted by dreamboat_annie on March 19, 2007, at 21:59:28

I have been having a lot of problems sleeping the past while so my pdoc prescribed Seroquel (25mg, but told me to take 1/2). A few years ago, I had tried Trazadone for sleep and even 12.5mg knocked me out until noon the next day and left me feeling extremely depressed. Is Seroquel as bad as Trazadone in terms of hang-over effect and causing depression?

Thanks so much.

No seroquel is better, tranzadone i was on years ago, omg i hated it, i couldnt stand the way it made me feel, i was a slug the next day. By noon when it wore off.

Stay with seroquel, trazadone is really a groggy drug.

But although seroquel will help with sleep it also can cause wt gain and diabetes. So if you know that trazadone knocks you out til noon what about a lower dose? Love Phillipa

I have recently ended a several month course of Seroquel. I found it even more sedating than Traz. It also had the odd effect of giving me restless legs. So even though it knocks me out, I'm squirming around half the night. No thanks.

I dont think it made me depressed directly. But it made me groggy, which made me lazy, which made me not exercise, which made me lay around, which kinda got my down.

However, I do get the best sleep of my life on it.

You have to decide: Is it worth the tradeoffs?

They're both sedating, to an extent because they both cause low blood pressure. Seroquel also is an antihistamine. At 12.5 or 25mg the risk of diabetes is pretty low as long as munchies aren't creeping wildly into the picture, considering its dosed to 800mg.

Trazodone does have a bad metabolite mCPP which can increase psychosis, however this doesn't usually happen except in those prone to it. One can quickly acclimate to the sedation from Trazodone -- as well as Seroquel too, although that varies again by the individual.

I always found Trazodone rather yucky not to mention for males, and it happened several times actually, priapism is a risk. Fortunately it wasn't severe.

I think its a matter of what works for someone -- personally I'm not in favor of using side effect agents, however they do have the general nature of not producing tolerance, other than becoming used to sedation which means dropping it and rinse and repeat.
