Very interesting article, and the newest "fad" seems to be the sale of bipolar and then the treating MD is supposed to add even more toxic substances.........

I'm inclined to agree. I stopped tianeptine today and my mood has brightened quite a bit already. It was altering my ability to deal with stress for sure, but it wasn't acting as a 'mood brightener' as sold. Whenever I've stopped taking antidepressants, after the withdrawal I've felt a lot better than when I was taking them. I'm starting to think that while they do improve mood during a severe depressive crisis their blunting effects prevent a complete return to wellness, for which the final step is coming off the drugs and learning slowly to stand again on your own two feet. Just as with any other serious illness. That seems to be almost totally forgotten or in modern US psychiatry, worse, I suspect it's often wilfully ignored to keep patients dependant and pockets well lined.
Again, this website or its authors will no doubt be tied with some subversive political/religious group that will be used to discredit it by the psychiophile factions.

They also mess up your brain so when having been even on a low dose for years you get these horrible withdrawal effects which make you doubt your sanity as I'm doing now. So many pysical side effects that are bizaree as my neck hurting for no reason. No come on I've only taken 50mg of luvox for over 6 years and now cutting to 25mg I feel like I am dying. Maybe that's their purpose to kill you? Love Phillipa

Stopping meds sometimes can feel cleansing, and seeing the world through your eyes without the drugs....and having it seem fasinating, it makes one wonder.

I used to be a vibrant person, that was before I was diagnosed with Bipolar and was put on all of these meds. Mind you I did have the hypomania before that was great for creativity but not for the rage that is the first symptom that I present, and then the overspending and reckless behaviour. I have been on the depressed side now for over a year. I take 10 mg of Zyprexa, 20 mg of Lexapro, 1.5 mg of Rivotril, and 100 mg of Lamictal. I'm definately experiencing 'blunting'. I miss my mania! My PDOC is going to try me off of Zyprexa next week and switch to Topamax (I think) and maybe I'll feel brighter. If not we're going to do a total med 'wash out' and start from scratch. She wants to see my symptoms. I came to her with the diagnosis of Bipolar so she wants to see for herself. I believe that these meds cause emotional numbness. I wish I could find the right ones that make me feel alive again.

I never even thought of self injuring until I went on Luvox, and going off Luvox made it a lot easier to stop self injuring.
I also have the sneaking suspicion that it caused lasting brain damage. I used to be so smart and quick, and even after I went off Luvox, I've never felt as smart as I was before I went on. My concentration is also shot. Even depressed, my concentration used to be just fine.
I've never seen any studies that show it kills off brain cells, but I would swear SSRI's made me stupid.

Dinah oh great my med that I'm weaning off after at least 6 years and I have had suicidal thoughts lately and it has done nothing for depression. I phoned the pdocs new one today and he wants to see me at 5:40 and I'm so scared. I am terrified that he will want to hospitalize me. NO please as last time I was put in a geriatric ward and next week I just remember I have a BD. OMG!!!!! Things can't get worse can they? Oh yes they can they always seem to. Love Phillipa ps how high was your dose?please write me?????

Did the suicidal thoughts happen after you started trying to taper off?
I'm not sure my reaction was typical. I have a tendency to get agitated and what's that word? for feeling itchy/jumpy? Norepinephrine is horrible for me, but I think SSRI's gave me a very mild version of that. Too mild for me to put a name on it, but enough to give some thoughts of self harm.
It doesn't mean that people less susceptible to akasthesia, is it? would respond the same way.
Medication adjustments can be awful. My therapist always helps me stay safe at home. We work something out.

I agree. Using meds has made it a lot harder for me to think properly. I think I did some real dammage esp with the lithium + SSRI combinations.

Dinah I don't remember. See I have brain damage. And my dose was only 50mg down to 25mg. God now I'm really scared as this pdoc only saw me once as he's my new one. Love Jan

I am not very surprised at these responses. I feel that prozac did 0, nothing for me and took it stupidly for over 3 years. Now the effexor 37.5 will try but no guarantee of staying on it. My psychologist says she interviewed many hundreds of people on effexor for a project and that none of them reported troubles with it. I told her the longest withdrawal thread here on p-babble is for "effexor", plus all over the internet....enough said.

Some of what should've been the best times of my life I can barely remember because I had to take a benzo to get through them

Well, to be fair, Luvox helped me an awful lot in my postpartum depression. If I ever felt bad enough again for long enough, I would reluctantly go back on it.
I think my problem was that I stayed on it too long and the pdoc kept increasing my dose to the max, and wanted to increase it past the max, and ignored the fact that a lot of the symptoms he was trying to treat were caused by the drug itself, at high doses.
My next pdoc immediately added a mood stabilizer and it made a huge difference.
So my problem isn't so much Luvox as it was a stubborn pdoc.
Except that I do think it made me stupid and wrecked my concentration.

They refer specifically to 'new drugs'. I wonder if they mean SSRIs etc, or if they are including all antidepressants in this. I would find it a bit scary if that was the case. I've been depressed most of my life and for 13 years tried to get out of it on my own. I've tried everything- therapy, CBT, exercise, I've changed jobs several times, I've even relocated. Nothing has worked for longer than a couple of months; I feel better for a while, and then come crashing down again. I finally accepted I need medication and am currently trying to find something that will work for me (not much luck so far..). If someone told me ADs are unlikely to help, I don't know what I'd be left with. The idea of just being an unhappy person for the rest of my life is just not acceptable... Plenty of people have told me that ADs really helped them find some sort of peace in their lives; they can't all be wrong!

At this point, I don't know what to believe about AD's. I believe that many people have found some relief for a period of time (how long? can't say as everyone's different). And with what?
Everyone responds differently to each AD. That's why you may go to your doctor and get prescribed one, then another, until you find what "works" for you. Hey, maybe by 2017 they'll have something that works the first time and doesn't poop out, that's what my pdoc told me today.Kind regards,
Val

I've had many drug trials where it made me worse, but I still don't believe drugs are evil. For many people they perform miracles and change lives. And hopefully someday science will progress enough where it understands the brain better, exactly how drugs work, and what drugs will work for what people.

Home from my pdocs emergency appointment. He wants me to continue to withdraw from the luvox now 12.5mg. And to my surprise he said to change from valium l5mg to 2mg long acting xanax twice a day with the 3mg of lunesta. Feels my anxiety is the cluprit and thinks it stems from my thyroid. And furious at the endo for not calling him back. Have to deal with that tomorrow as he suggested getting another one. I know a lot of you will be surprised at his recommendations but he has a waiting list of people from different states but takes the patients from here first. Asked at the pharmacy if they heard of him and they had and said heard nothing but good things about him. So that's good. Second pdoc to say my anxiety was not a disguised depression only that if it is too high it can lead to depression as high anxiety is crippling. Love Phillipa

I always told my pdoc this and I would say if I felt worse than I did without the med why should I continue taking the med. He always had some reason but many times I said I was stopping a med that made me worse.
And many of the SSRI's made me suicidal so if thats not making you worse, what is?
The "experts" know so little, they just experiment with our minds because we are so desparate, we won't say anything and just go along with it even when we feel worse. It is up to us to tell them, enough is enough.
The wrong AD is like taking poison. The side effects can kill you.
