Facing an impending switch, I have read everything I could find on the Internet about Nardil weight gain. There seem to be three trains of thought:
1) You are going to gain weight on Nardil, no matter what. The drug slows down your metabolism, changes how your liver processes everything, etc.
2) You are likely to gain weight because of increased hunger (carb cravings), or sedation that makes you less likely to exercise.
3) You can control your weight or even lose it on Nardil if you follow a healthy diet/exercise program.
Which number do you support and why? Thanks, Michael

Cripes Michael, I don't think there is any
simple answer to this one....I gained weight on Parnate, the MAOI that
has the reputation[maybe because of more
of an amphetamine effect?]of being less
likely to cause weight gain.Doesn't seem to be much medical info
[studies] of MAOI weight gain, and I doubt if
anyone can say just why it happens.Carb cravings do seem to be something MAOI
users report a lot, so if there is some
metabolic alteration occurring along with
increased carb intake...WHOA!!!I suppose of you started exercising[or
increased it if you were already accustomed to it]
and decreased your caloric intake from what you
had been ingesting before, maybe you wouldn't
gain weight. And then there is the 'X' factor of other
drugs one might be taking concurrently...
then you've got a problem assigning blame
for the weight gain.It's complex!

I can tell you what i've read, but not experienced. Weight gain is a common side effect of Nardil, Sometimes as much as 20 lbs. in at least 10 percent of the patients and probably more. Calorie restriction and exercise help. Most people lose the weight once they stop the drug.
Personally i wouldn't worry about it too much, just exercise and reduce your calories and i bet you won't gain any.

I got a different slant from the one that Ken gave, although it could be consistent. When I considered Nardil, my pdoc said that weight gain on Nardil isn't that bad for most people. Some don't gain any weight, but even if you do, it's not likely to be more than 8 lbs.
Some people do gain more, even quite a bit, but it's by no means foreordained.

I hope to start Nardil soon. At the moment I feel so weak and weary I hardly get any exercise. If Nardil works I'll be on my bike again, shedding kilos

I am not taking Nardil now - it was many years ago, and I quit because of sexual side effects. I was taking 60mg. I am prone to being heavy, but I didn't gain on Nardil. I was riding a bike a lot in those days. I want to start it again, but can't get anyone at the county clinic to give me a scrip. I'm 62 now and have had some heart issues in the past - arrythmias, a-fib - that's their reason for saying no. I don't think it is valid, but not sure. Richard
