Differences between alprazolam and clonazepam

Posted by Franz on March 7, 2007, at 19:00:44

Hello, I tried 0.25 mg alprazolam or clonazepam at night on different days and the effect I noticed was different.

Alprazolam seems to have a more clear anxiolytic effect with more deshinibition during the next day (I do more things), it improves my mood, which clonazepam seems not to do.

Anyone noticed this?.

Yes, it may be because clonazepam is about 10 or 20 times more potent than alprazolam.

Wow, all the charts I read showed them as equivalent.

I thought is was a difference in mode of action more than potency.

Alprazolam is xanax. It is said to have a weak antidepressant effect. Which for me it does. And it works very quickly . Used a lot for Panic disorders. I've also taken klonopin and seriously it made me feel suicidal the pdoc said stop the klonopin and get back on the xanax. Worked like a charm. Good luck. Love Phillipa

xanax is faster acting and doesn't last as long as Klonopin. It tends to be mood elevating, but also produces more problems with rage reactions. Klonopin is slower-onset, long-acting, and tends to be a mood stabilizer--its good for (hypo)mania and some complicated cases of depression. Personally, I found it helpful, but after 6months it made me kind of sad.

Maybe I should try bromazepam?

Thanks for the replies.

Maybe I should try bromazepam?. I have used low doses and liked it, but only occasionally. I don´t know how it is to take it several times/week.

An it is a bit out of use it seems.

No, clonazepam is only about 5 times more potent (Dr. Bob's first chart is fairly accurate from my experience with 4 benzodiazepines), but it is more subtle, and has a slower term of uptake.

Alprazolam, Xanax, has a mild antidepressant effect for the short term use of it because of the euphoria that is obtained from the immediacy of the uptake of the agent.

Its why I still say often that it should only be used PRN (pro re ne), as needed, because that "immediacy" (gotta get rid of this anxiety) will eventually start to fade a bit and if habituation occurs, one will have to dial way back to get any of that sharp crisp feeling again.

Can it be that someone told me bromazepam was bad for the memory (more than other benzos)?

I have been taking Rivotril (Clonazepam/Klonopin) for a number of years now. I have noticed it doesn't take the edge off of anxiety like it used to, mind you I'm down from 4mg to 1mg. I asked my PDOC if I could try Xanax or Ativan and she said they are more addictive because they have a shorter half-life and one feels the need to take more to get that 'boost'. She said she may switch me to Valium as she feels that would be comparable to Rivotril and not as addictive.

I'm on valium and a bit of xanax . In the past I've been on all of them. Took xanax by itself for years my choice to change as my granddaughter got hold of a new bottle of it. I really think my Daughte-in-law who abuses drugs took it and blames her daughter. But anyway I'd still be on it if not for that. I never felt the need to increase. Actually a pdoc said take more didn't like the feeling and cut back. My new pdocs plan for me is no ad's as it was obvious to him my diagnosis is primary panic disorder. Weaning off the ad and he plans to give me long acting xanax. Love Phillipa ps seriously I've never had a problem switching benzos whether short or long acting. But klonopin did make me feel suicidal. And pdoc immediatedly put me back on xana.

Klonopin+magnesium?

Yesterday I took 0.125 mg clonazepam at night but also some magnesium and zinc. I have tried it before and I think it works better than clonazepam alone, like it does not lower mood.

It can be purely subjective and there may be other factors (like more sun today).

Searching for K+Mg interaction I found this.

For CFS "Dr. Cheney most frequently prescribes the combination of Klonopin and Doxepin, along with the supplement "Magnesium Glycinate Forte."
http://www.immunesupport.com/library/showarticle.cfm?ID=3154

Maybe K+Mg potentiates and lowers the excitatory threshold?.

I hope this is not redirected because I am talking about K+Mg not Mg alone.

Thanks.
