Emsam - positive experiences for Bipolar II?

Posted by chiron on February 12, 2007, at 22:07:01

Mostly bad depression- for a long, long time.
'Mania' in the form of agitation.
Mood stabilizers make me worse - increased agitation & lower lows.
Today my dr suggested Emsam. I have never tried an MAOI.
I've gone through: Prozac, Paxil, Lexapro, Zoloft, Effexor, Cymbalta, Wellbutrin, Lithium, Topamax, Tegretal, Lamictal, Depakote, Seroquel, Adderall, Geodon, Abilify, Zyprexa, Cytomel, Serzone (I may have missed some).
Is there anyone out there that can give me some hope?

I did not have success, but it is only because it made me MEAN. Wellbutrin did the same thing to me. I never got above the initial doseage.
The side effects were not bad, except for the skin irritation, which does not bother some people, and when I put it on my thigh, it was not a problem.

I'd say try it, or better yet, from what I read here, try the parnate or nardil if you are disciplined enough to avoid the foods, not just the drugs. I wish I would have tried that instead of the emsam. People on this board who have tried both seem to say the emsam is not the same potency. There ARE some success stories here about emsam if you search...

PS I have just been diagnosed Bipolar II but still am not convinced the mood stabilizers are the way to go, esp. when I see similar stories to yours.

Why did you go off lamictal?

-maybe tianeptine? supposedly its similar to lamictal inthat it decreases se uptake,
but increases its availability throughout the brain (maybe)

-low dose effexor, 75mg might be a decent option, it seems like its pushed way too high for alot of people.

Increases! sorry... what I meant is tianeptine decreases serotonin, by increasing uptake. and that it might increase overall se availability, but not transmission. lamictal does something completly different.. jeez, I shouldnt recreationaly surf medical stuff in the web and post here simulataneously.. Lamotrigine is in no way a reuptake enhancer. they should set up a pseudoscience board on this site for readers of journal abstracts.
