How do SSRIs work?

Posted by Klavot on January 14, 2007, at 5:36:12

SSRIs inhibit reuptake of 5HT by 60 - 80 % or something, thus causing presynaptic concentrations of 5HT to increase. Obviously this process cannot continue unhindered, otherwise your presynaptic concentrations of 5HT would rise to toxic levels - a bit like a blocked drain where you just keep adding water. So what happens to prevent 5HT levels from rising too much? Does your brain compensate by making less 5HT? Does MAO enzyme activity increase? Or what?

The serotonin exits the brain after it sticks around longer than it normally would. At least that's my understanding of it. Of course again I could be wrong. Love Phillipa

I've wondered the same thing. Does the brain stop producing as much serotonin? Do the MAO enzymes step up their activity to destroy the extra serotonin? Are new reuptake receptors created to suck up the extra serotonin? Do norepinephrine or dopamine receptors lend a hand and start sucking up serotonin? No idea. But I have a hunch that somewhere in there lies the cause of poopout.

I thought I heard that no one fully comprehends precisely how they work, and that whole "chemical imbalance-need more seratonin" story was an oversimplification promoted to the public by the SSRI marketing teams.

Here I go again when I worked in psch I gave groups and explained as told to do that it's like a space ship coming into the synapis and anchoring on a receptor staying longer then floating up and out of the synapse. Love Phillipa Simple huh? Too bad it was or is wrong
