Can anyone point me to a decent site that can explain this to me better? I know I have sleep problems and BPII. I would like to learn more about this as I feel it might explain some of my problems. Is there a fix for that?

I've found this website a good resource for bipolar disorder and sleep: http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/darkrx.htm

Seems many of us don't sleep well...I don't get any stage 4 and very little stage 3. No wonder I'm a zombie during the day. Good luck.

My Mother had Addison's and slept all day. And I go to bed later the older I get it's like I've swiched. And like to be up at night and sleep during the day. What's that mean? Love Phillipa

Sleep changes as we age in life -- as newborns we sleep 2/3 of the day. During the main part of life, we sleep an average of 8 hours or more. As we pass our fifties, this starts to change and by older age we may need as little as 5 or 6 hours.

REM sleep is not necessary to survive but it is a fascinating part of human existance and certainly contributes to our quality of life. This also changes as we age.

Some amusing trivia about animal sleep cycles:

Our circadian rhythm is governed by the suprachiasmatic nucleus and slightly exceeds 24 hours on average, it is not known exactly, but it can exist in total isolation.

Thanks to all of you. Some interesting reading. I'm not sure how I got messed up...I used to be able to sleep just fine but I'm determined to fix it. Me without enough sleep is just plain miserable.

Thanks Jay but I've always needed more than the average amount of sleep. In high school one day a week I skipped school to sleep til noon. And graduation night when all night out was allowed I wanted to go home and to be in bed asleep at 2 am. Now the light is being switched off then. In my case working 3-ll for l5 years which I love felt I had two days in one. Accustomed me to the later bedtime and waking time. Love Phillipa

I've needed for a while more than the average sleep (9-9.5 is decent). Depression and anxiety interfere with these rhythms too so its not surprising. Nothing out of the ordinary.
