Damn I'm confused!
Today I took a really low dose of Ritalin, 5mg I think.
I felt much calmer and happier for a while!
Why is this?
Do I really have ADD?I'd just convinced myself it was stupid of me to think I could possible have it.
I don't think Dexedrine made me calm, but maybe my dose was to high!
So confused!

> Do I really have ADD?
This was my first guess. Think of it this way (if you are ADD) things could be much worse!-Monte

Well Tom, if you were American you'd have ADHD, but as you are British you don't.
(I very much enjoyed the university library on Ritalin. The new building, the clean smell of books, the design in the carpet, it was all a delight.)

Ritalin helps calm many people. I sleep much better on it. I don't wake up during the night and toss and turn a lot less. In a sense, it shouldn't matter whether you have ADD or not. If a med helps and doesn't harm, then it makes sense to take it. Ideally, the decision to use or not use a medication should be based on its effectiveness, not on the diagnosis.

Thanks for responses all :)
UK docs hate stimulants
So I'm afraid I had to order it over the net
Getting a script for it is just about possible in the UK, but not easy.
An NHS Psych at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge-Thats a teaching hospital for Gods sake!
Told me that "Ritalin is addictive and Neurotoxic"
I don't know what gave him the authority to say that

I've always thought it was a delicious irony that the country that invented the 'War on Drugs' seems to have few qualms about feeding controlled substances such as Ritalin and Desoxyn (crystal meth) to its children.

"Ritalin is addictive and Neurotoxic".
There is some truth to that though.

Ritalin activates intermediate early genes, cFOS, delta FosB, in the neucleus accumbens, just like do harder drugs like cocaine (ie so called addiction switch)
Some studies suggest that these genes remain activated long after the drug is discontinued.
So, when a kid treated with an ADHD med growing up becomes addicted to cocaine, is it the ADHD or the previously activated addiction genes?

I'd say bipolars who took Ritalin were predisposed. ADHD usually shows up much earlier than bioplor. People with ADHD are common seen with comorbid depression, anxiety, bipolar, addiction, tic disorders, Tourettes. A lot of people think stimulants cause tics in some kids. While this may be true in some cases, in others, it just uncovered the disorder that was yet to be fully manifested.

There are a lot of genes altered by stimulant treament. Some of the genes altered by stimulant treatment are the exact genes being studied as contributing to bipolar symptoms.

I second that, you don't have to be ADHD for Ritalin to calm you down. Stimulants are fantastic feeling drugs but they can be very hard on your system. Often times they make people much more emotional and even depressed after that initial 2-3 week high phase.
This is the end of the thread.
