I've heard a new edition is due out. But that was a couple of years ago now. There was a rumour (?) that there would be a radical overhaul from categorical dx's to a dimensional approach involving rating symptoms for severity.
Does anybody know when the next edition is due out?
Does anybody know whether there is going to be a move from categorical to dimensional?
Does anybody know whether the process etc is documented anywhere (whether there are journal discussions of the topic, for example).
In particular I'm interested in what may or may not be included in the symptom list and whether this really will amount to a 'radical' overhaul if they choose to keep the categories as short hand ways of describing the symptoms...

Estella I didn't read the whole thing yet. I understand there will be a lot more categories of bipolar reguarding tx resistant depression. Love Phillipa

Hey. Nice to see you too. It is a site that has been developed by a person who has been dx'd with autistic spectrum disorder.
He got a little fed up with the judements regarding 'lack of a theory of mind' and 'flat affect' and 'lack of empathy' etc so he created the website to put a slightly different spin on things.
He talks about how others have a delusion that they can mind read and so forth. The quality of the critique varies a little across the different articles... But there are some valid points. Shows how easy it is to 'medicalise' others...
I've encountered a number of sites like that over the years... That one is one of the best I've seen, however.

Sounds like they are still in early planning stages (if they have even got that far). Earliest time frame on next edition is 2011 though it could be later than that.
One can make suggestions... Don't know whether they are considered anonomously, however...
Hard to say what will happen.
I've heard that task force negotiations can be a little like 'I'll give you that additional symptom on this criteria if you give me this additional symptom on that criteria'.
Methinks... The main obstical for psychiatry becoming a 'real science just like medicine' is... politics. Health insurance companies and the like. Actually, come to think of it that is probably the main obstical for medicine becoming a 'real science just like biology' lol.
Sigh.
