what is the minimum amount of time i have to wait before switching from emsam to parnate? i have ten days before i go off to college and i'm hoping i can get started on the parnate quickly and get some kind of effect from it, as the emsam was anxiogenic to me. i need something to quell my social anxiety for those first few weeks at school that are pure socializing :\\\
i was on emsam 6mg/24h and my pdoc wants my dose of parnate AFTER titrating up to be 20mg :(
i'll start on 5mg parnate. hell, even 2.5mg, if it means waiting less time for it to start getting in my system.
thanks

Conventional prescribing guidelines say two weeks between MAOIs. Parnate is the worst one as far as setting off hypertensive crises, so it might be prudent to follow this. As far as the dosage, 40 mg/day of Parnate is the minimum dosage that should be attained before declaring the trial a failure. That's not to say you might not respond to a lower dose, but you would not be giving the trial a fair shot if you did not get up to at least 40 mg/day at some point.Todd

What is making you change from EMSAM? I heard it was great. Love Phillipa

i'm changing from emsam because it made my social anxiety worse. it was pretty great for energy, motivation, clarity of thought, pro-sexual effects. but those mean f*ck all to me when i still end up being crippled by negative thought patterns whenever i try to socialize.
this seems to be consistent with what i've heard about emsam: good for lethargic, melancholic depression; not so good for depression that RESULTS FROM social anxiety. the latter is exactly what i have.
are you guys sure i wouldn't be alright with starting parnate early at 2.5 or 5mg doses?

alright. i'm gonna get flak for this, but against everyone's cautions, i began parnate today. tested the waters with 5mg: it's a go. four hours later, another 5mg: no problem. my blood pressure was the same as usual throughout the day, and at some points a little lower. so hypertension seems to be a non issue so far.
