Activating - Sedating SSRIs..

Posted by gadman on August 17, 2006, at 14:27:22

Can anyone help me rank these SSRIs in order of Activating (Stimulating)...

I know Prozac is #1 along with Wellbutrin. What about the others? Effexor, Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, Cymbalta, Celexa.

I came across a chart a while back, but can not seem to find it.

Thanks,

Gadman

Hi gadman,

I would think Effexor and Cymbalta as SSNRI's would have the potential to be activating due to their dual action that includes norepi. As far as the SSRI's, I found they are very individualistic with what snows one person can spin another up. This response can also seem to change for one as time goes on on them.

I'm not sure I'm much help.

The most sedating (individual results may vary) are Luvox being the most and Paxil possibly being somewhat less. Luvox is still excellent for OCD even though it has been generic for a while. Prozac, being the second (the first true one had so many serious side effects that it was pulled) on the market is less refined and probably the most activating. The other newer ones such as Celexa and Lexapro is anyone's guess, could be neutral, who knows.

These all, as noted, are individual results varying.

everyone is different, but from my own expierence...

Prozac-Zoloft-Lexapro-Paxil

paxil being the most sedating.

never tried Luvox before.

Effexor is an SNRI but for me it would be more stimulating than Prozac (the short time I was on it)

Luvox most sedating, prozac most stimulating, my experiences with the others they just wound me up? Love Phillipa

All,

Thanks for the replies... The reason I am asking is I am currently in the process of switching from Effexor to Lexapro. E just wasn't doing it for me anymore at the lower doses and at the higher doses it makes me feel spacey.

I was just curious of how my general energy level was going to be on Lex vs E. E was generally activating for me, but at times could be sedating.

Everything I am reading about Lex says that for most people it is in the activating-normal range with a few sedating. Which is really what I want, I do not want sedating.

Thanks,

gadman

Lex is not nearly as activating as Effexor for me » gadman

and I just decided on my own to reduce my dosage of Lex from 20 to 10mg and add 37.5mg of Effexor. I have gained back all the weight I lost while on Effexor (30 lbs.) and I feel I'm really lacking energy on Lex. I hope your change goes well, despite what the drugs do for me!

I have been on Paxil celexa prior to switching to Lex. I found it extremely stimulating at first and it caused insomnia. I now take 20mg/day and have no negative side effects whatsoever. I tried going back to 10mg for 2 days and remembered what depression was. BTW it took me 9 months to get to 20mg starting at 5mg day.

Grief really that is good for me to know. So you started real low. And did you notice any improvement at the low dose? Love Phillipa
