Help! I am such a mess!!!

Posted by TrishP on August 11, 2006, at 10:15:00

I'm having surgery on the 21st and I am a wreak! My gyno who is doing the surgery says to take Lexapro. I noticed a lot of the gynos push Lexapro as an anxiety buster. They also tell the women that there Lexapro is the least likely to cause weight gain and that the inital hunger will subside (just to watch your appetite).

After 4 days on Lexapro I quit because I was terrified of another Celexa incident (where I packed on the weight and have never been able to get it off!).

I've taken Effexor and Wellbutrin for depression and anxiety and I just wonder if that combo would be better than Lexapro.

I'm too scared to trust my gyno about the Lexapro!

What do I do?

If it were me I would discuss this with the doctor who initially prescribed your meds rather than the gynae. There are probably some other meds which are far better for you than SSRI's for anxiety related to an acute event. I would also ask this doc for a plan you could give the hospital to help with your anxiety should it get really bad.

I am a theatre nurse and let me assure you that gynae surgery is very safe and the staff take excellent care of you. Everything is well monitored during and after the surgery. You should talk to your admitting nurse about your anxiety so they can help you.
I have had hyster surgery a few years ago and it was SOOO much easier than I expected.

If your only problem is anxiety over the upcoming surgery, you might want to see if you can take a benzodiazepine like Xanax or Klonopin (you probably wouldn't get a full reaction from lexapro in time anyway). They might be contraindicaed w/surgery, but I don't know as I have no first hand experience with them. If there are long term issues like depression or chronic anxiety, benzos may not be a good idea since people develop rapid tolerance. In such a case, you might want to talk to someone who is knowledgeable about psych drugs.

Hope it helps,
Check
