Can someone tell me about trazodone?

Posted by Deneb on August 9, 2006, at 21:27:53

My pdoc just gave me a script for 10x50mg trazodone. She says it's used for sleep and is an antidepressent. I'm going to take it for my trip in New York. I know for sure I will have problems sleeping.

Does it really work for sleep?

What should I expect on this med?

Anyone know why she gave me trazodone instead of sleep meds like Ambien?

I guess my pdoc is not anti-med after all. LOL What was I thinking? How can a pdoc be anti-med?

She said that unlike other sleep meds, people don't develop a tolerance to trazadone.

I'm only going to be taking it for 6 nights, don't know why she's worried about tolerance.

It's also an antidepressant not used much for that usually for sleep. Some like others say he knocks them out and they're sleepy the next day. Maybe someone that knows more will answer in the morning. Love Phillipa ps did you google it?

HEY - I know about this one!! I've taken Traz for years. The first time was to help me sleep and calm the nightmares I was having. It really worked for me then. Several years later, I found myself needing help with sleeping. My doc prescribed Traz -just for sleep, at that time. So the next time, my now pdoc prescribed it for both: sleep aid; and bolster Effexor.

Bottom line. I found Traz helpful in different situations.

Good luck and I hope it helps you as it did me.

I took trazodone for quite a while when I first started MAOIs about ten years ago. It will sure make you sleepy but it was really too much of a drugged out feeling for me. Now I use diphenhydramine hydrochloride(Benadryl). It works for me but not everybody. I get very drowsy with it but it is a milder effect than trazodone.

My GP does not care much for Ambien and similar drugs and would also be more likely to prescribe trazodone. That also happens to be my own viewpoint, as trazodone is a more conservative and less expensive alternative to things like Ambien and Lunesta. However, if trazodone did not work, I certainly think a prescription for Ambien or Lunesta might be in order, but I would suggest these drugs should be used rather sparingly and not for extended time periods.

I've also taken trazodone off and on for years for sleep and it's always performed fairly well. I now take trazodone 50mg plus 100mg Lyrica at bedtime and sleep is even better (according to my most recent sleep study). I am very sensitive to meds and I don't get any hangover from traz. It's pretty weight neutral for me, and that is a good thing.

I think it works for some, not for others, depending on what is causing disrupted sleep.

I don't like Benadryl very much. It takes a really long time to kick in and it makes me super groggy in the morning. I don't want to get up in the morning on Benadryl. This is when it works of course, Benadryl doesn't work very well for me when I'm travelling, I must be too stressed for it to work or something. I'm really hoping the trazodone will work.

Trazodone works beautifully for me. I take 200 mgs. one half hour before bedtime and it makes me very sleepy. And, no adverse/hangover effects in the morning...i get up bright and early and feel fine.

certainly helps me get to sleep but I feel zapped of any zest the next morning and mos of the day. It's like it's put the sleep part of my brain into overdrive so any kind of movement or getting out of bed or doing anything that would be facilitated by normal dopamine levels is out of the question. IT's just like I can't do it and it makes me feel like a weak and miserable person sometimes.
This isn't so much a problem when I cut back doses but taking an SSrI during the day makes it worse.
It will work fine for differnet scenarious but I hate the crap
