What would a psychiatrist or GP prescribe for someone with the following symptoms:
Difficulty falling and staying asleep every night
Social phobia (not severe, more like withdrawal and anti social, except with family)
anxiety (fear over future)
fatigue
weepiness
loss of pleasure
vague aches & pains
inability to stay on taskHere is the biggie--DRY MOUTH AND SEVERE DRY EYES, therefore elavil is out. Zoloft caused severe intestinal distress. Wellbutrin caused headaches and anger. Effexor caused nightmares. Ambien is great for getting to sleep but invariably causes up and down emotions the next day after using it. Doesn't want weight gain--i.e. paxil.
Is it unrealistic to think that something could help a person with these symptoms?
The GP says: EXERCISE
thanks,
Jane

It's kinda ironic: a lot of times, we ask people, "But what are your symptoms?" when we're trying to help with suggestions. In your case, though, after hearing your symptoms, I'm heading back to the most general comment: that sounds like depression to me...
Meaning: I don't think you need to look at treating individual symptoms, so much as treating the underlying cause of all of them -- Depression.
As for what to recommend -- besides pitching in to send your GP to Clue School -- all I can suggest is seeing a really good psychopharmacologist. There are a ton of ADs out there, you've only tried a couple, so there's a great chance that something will work well for you. Desipramine is said to be pretty weight neutral, for instance, and quite effective. Cymbalta is an option, as would be Lexapro, etc.
Good luck.

Hi, Jane.
I think Racer's post is spot-on. I, too, would encourage you to find a psych-med specialist – easier said than done, unfortunately.
> Here is the biggie--DRY MOUTH AND SEVERE DRY EYES
Has this been looked into by your GP? Could it be a rheumatoid or other condition?
I don't mean this next question as a challenge. I'm unfamiliar with your history, and it sounds like you may be pretty sensitive to meds. How long were you on the Zoloft, Wellbutrin, and Effexor and did you manage to get up to the clinical doses?
> Doesn't want weight gain--i.e. paxil.
Paxil may or may not cause weight gain. It's really hard to predict in advance.
Good luck. I hope you get some knowledgeable help soon. As Racer says, there are still more options out there for you.
This is the end of the thread.
