I've been on EMSAM for about 5 weeks(only 6 mgs.). I really like this med except for one side effect (That is getting progressively worse)..early morning wakening!!! Damn, it's always something with these $*@#! meds! Last night i fell asleep at 12:30 and woke at 3:30, 3 hrs of sleep is not enough for me.
Ambien and Lunesta do NOTHING FOR ME, so what my Pdoc has me on is 200 mgs of Trazodone at bedtime. I'm thinking of asking for Seroquel, Halcion, or Chloral Hydrate.
Your opinions and advice would be very much appreciated. Also i take 3 mgs. of Klonopin daily, but i've developed benzo tolerance having been on either Ativan, Xanax and now Klonopin during the past 25 yrs.

Halcion won't allow you to stay asleep long enough to get you through the night. You will likely experience rebound awakenings. You can either take more of it upon awakening or combine it with temazepam. I did not like the way chloral hydrate affected me. It burned my stomach and was no match for Nardil. If trazodone, ramelteon, temazepam, or eszopiclone are of no use, then I guess you are looking at Seroquel. Personally, I have no problem with Seroquel at 25-50mg.

> Scott, What is the difference between Seroquel and Klonopin? ThanksHi Jane.
They are from two completely different classes of drugs, although they are sometimes used for similar purposes. Seroquel (quetiapine) is a neuroleptic antipsychotic developed primarily as an antipsychotic to treat schizophrenia. It is used sometimes to treat depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Klonopin (clonazepam) is a benzodiazepine that is used as both an anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) and anticonvulsant (anti-epileptic). It has been found to also be helpful for social phobia, panic disorder, and insomnia.
Seroquel and drugs in its class are known to have side effects that include involuntary muscle movements that are sometimes irreversible, although this is rare with Seroquel. Klonopin and drugs in its class are known to produce dependence and are difficult to discontinue.

Monte this seems to be a pattern on EMSAM Robert David took it with klonopin and I believe he removed the patch at night at least for a while. Do you have his e-mail I can ask him if it's okay to give you his? Love Phillipa

I take 50 mg/day Marplan and find that 50 mg Seroquel works reasonably well. Halcion is much more powerful than Ambien or Lunesta, but as Scott indicates, its short half life can cause early morning awakening. The short half life along perhaps also with its high potency may be part of the reason this is one of the more problematic benzos as far as dependency and severe adverse psychological effects. Prosom is very similar chemically but has a longer half life and seems to be less problematic. I think it is also relatively powerful.Todd
