Cool! Thanks for posting that. The story about scientists finding a faulty gene that is present in both depression and bipolar was interesting and that they are already working on developing a medicine to target it is great news.

Hi,
Yeah, this has been around for a few years and the FDA is actually fast tracking it for psychotic depression... im not sure if RU will be effective for all types, but the research shows it has benefits for psychotic and bipolar depression... if ur an american, u could potenitally get ur hands on a sample of this, depending on ur state i understand...

I'd hate to see the slow track. :)

I tried RU-486, now known more universally as mifepristone (Mifeprex, Corlux). In addition to blocking progesterone receptors, it also blocks cortisol receptors. The idea is that you take the drug every day (600mg) for a week and then discontinue it. It is thought to reset the HPA system in the body and allows one to remain free of depression for an extended period of time thereafter. It didn't work for me.

RU-486 for depression...

Since this drug has been around for a while in both the US and internationally, does that mean docs will just use this form off-label? Or is a more expen$ive, "improved" product in development?

I am not aware of any other cortisol receptor antagonists in the pipeline. I imagine there is some interest, though.

Mifepristone is not available by prescription. When used for medical abortion, it is available only directly to physicians who meet certain criteria set forth by the FDA. Patients must sign a patient agreement and agree to return for subsequent visits. When used for depression, a IND must be submitted to the FDA and a petition made to the Feminist Majority Foundation for a supply of the drug under a compassionate use protocol. Of course, the drug is also available in investigative studies.

RU-486 is not going to work for everbody based on the fact that not everybody's depression is associated with high levels of cortisol.

Scott, what were the side effects of the treatment?

I am particualarly interested in this because my hormone testing revealed I have progesterone levels twice the normal range. I should get my cortisol levels checked.

I really didn't have any. However, I don't have a uterus. I don't know if your condition would have any impact upon the side effects mifepristone produces. Generally, there aren't any in healthy females who aren't pregnant.

I actually began to respond to it somewhat after the first few days. However, this improvement disappeared, and I felt washed-out by the end of the week. It is possible that my adrenals began producing too much cortisol and were exhausted.

What options do you have to treat that?

Good point....but I wish I could get myself in somewhere to try it, because I think stress/high cortisol is a problem for me. I've asked around and it seems near impossible, and very politically muddled by the anti-abortion community who seem to want the drug and trials banned altogether.

If anyone knows of any clinic actually offering this-not a placebo- can they say?
