Hi, I've been researching the meds I am on on the internet. Many sights list my drigs 2 times. Once as "systemic" and again just plain. DOes anyone know why this is, and which line of info I should be reading?
Thanks somuch!

> maryAlmost everything that you put in your body is a systemic medication, orally or injected -- it means it becomes part of your blood system, it is ever present.
A non systemic medication would not stay in your blood stream -- oral ones I can't think offhand except maybe for old fashioned antacids (not like Zantac), and topical medications (creams) that are not generally absorbed in your bloodstream.
Though some topical ones are absorbed to a limited extend, such as hydrocortisone and more often large quantities of benadryl external cream can become systemic transdermally (through the skin, like a patch.)

Willyee,
what about eyedrops, then? Are they absorbed systemically also? I wonder because my mother is using a fluoroquinolone eyedrop due to retinal problems etc. complicated. I told her not to worry about the systemic effects of eye drops. Wrong?
Thx,
Val

> maryAny medication you ingest is "systemic" ( i.e. circulating throughout your body) You ask a very important question, because many people believe that taking AD's, etc. only effect the brain...but as we all know, the myriad of side-effects remind us that these meds effect our bodies as a whole.

Almost any medication -- antacids don't enter the bloodstream (I'm talking about Tums -- not Pepto-Bismol, which will convert to a slight amount of salicylate in the blood, or Zantac and other H2 drugs.) Well I suppose Tums will raise your level of Calcium but its not significant. But yes, basically anything you put in your body.
