NE and caffeine and cymbalta

Posted by llrrrpp on May 30, 2006, at 18:51:05

Hi All
I've been taking cymbalta 60 mg for about 3 weeks now, and I also take seroquel 25-50 mg for insomnia. I dare say that the AD is treating me well. I think I feel pretty darned good. Now... the bad news...

I'm sitting at my desk, surveying the landscape, and I realize that I have 3 coffee cups, 4 empty pop bottles, and a couple of tea cups. This is kind of crazy for me. I was drinking 2 cups of green tea a day until I started the seroquel. It made me feel groggy, and so... I started drinking coffee again. I haven't had coffee in 4 months prior to this. not a drop. um. yeah, so now I'm drinking coffee and tea in the morning, cola at lunch, another coffee in the afternoon, and maybe another cola or 3 at dinnertime. Insomnia is not a problem, because the seroquel knocks me out everytime. I'm kinda tapping my foot a lot lately, but I don't feel that panicky jittery that I associate with caffeine overdose.

today's consumption
am
1 glass iced tea (black)
2 shots espresso

afternoon
20 oz diet pepsi
2 glasses iced tea (black)

The Night is STILL young!!! cr*ppers, I think I'm caffeine intoxicated. Is such a thing possible?

Any hoo....
My questions: is the AD effect due to coffee? or cymbalta? Will my world spiral out of control if the 300-400 mg I'm currently consuming should decrease by 90%. Is there any risk to drinking so much coffee & cola when I'm taking these drugs?

I thank you, and so does my norepinephrine (her name is Neffy) in advance for your kind responses. I know it's a dumb question, but I'm kinda worried I might be tinkering a little too much with my delicate brainses.

Well, the LD50 of caffeine is about 18 grams, or about 150 cups of coffee. It does increase epinephrine and norepinephrine by the HPA axis, so you do pose an interesting question.

In the Emerald City (Seattle), quintessentially known for coffee, high consumption is quite normal, probably due to depression from the grey that occupies most of the fall and early spring. (I went to college there and yes, I carried around 4 shots of espresso a day in a thermos.)

If it isn't affecting your sleep, the amount you described, while a significant amount of caffeine, is nowhere near any lethal amounts. Nevertheless, long term use does have subtle effects on the sleep cycle. Since you are aware of how much caffeine you are taking in, and its anyone's guess but the tea could have even more caffeine than the rest of what you mentioned, perhaps a reduction in a glass or two of something, or having one of any of the above beverages decaf might shed some light on whether the medication or your caffeine use is stronger for your depression

I love that you named your norepinephrine Neffy. I really do. I want to use that if you don't mind, maybe a different name so I won't be a copy cat, god forbid not that.., I think it is a great way to make the weight of my seriousness of going at this thing lighter and give me some perspective. I really just love that.
I also love coffee, I drink it no matter what drug I am on, some make for more drinking and some for less. I could drink hardly any on Strattera, it made it taste bad. but if I don't drink it I get the truly most awful migraine from hell. And I don't want to stop drinking it. I do buy half cafe from folgers, it isn't bad, and already made 1/2 strength. Two cups in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. I can lay down and fall asleep right after drinking full strength. But, I am good sleeper, I am blessed for that. Anyway, I am just blabbling, I must have something better to do...

thanks Donna and yxibow
I think I have a better time on caffeine. I look forward to it, and I need stuff to look forward to. It might help with my concentration. There was a long time when I wasn't looking forward to anything, even chocolate. really. So I'm better off with a few jitters than feeling profoundly anhedonistic.

Donna, feel free to use "Neffy" there's also Tonie and ACHie. (the last one pronounced Ay-See-H-eeee. )

I think this is only the beginning. Neffy and Tonie are the main NT's being tweaked at the moment, but Histie and ACHie, and Cortie are also affected. GABy, and Glutie too. and I take beta blockers occasionally, these probably affect Epie.

Well, have a nice weekend, you two
-ll

come hang out on the social board sometime?

Apparently, the outfit of the day includes a fishy stiletto and a toe ring. (I just got a pedicure myself, but I don't do stilettos...)

Oh dear, it is as I feared. I won't fit in. I was hoping I could get by with running shorts and bare dirty feet.

hey donna, you can wear whatever you want!
We have a lot of fun on the social board.
and people post stuff about their problems IRL, those that don't pertain directly to therapy, or medication. Things like what to do in awkward social situations, or when the world is falling apart. Things like... not knowing what to wear to a get-together :-)

don't be shy!
yours,

ok, you convinced me. I will be there with bells on, since any attire is appropriate. See you there.
