I've started Manerix (Moclobemide) 150mg BID since a couple of days. I'm thinking about asking my Pdoc to try Provigil (Alertec) for the fatigue/memory problems etc I have since I started to have depression/anxiety problem in 2001.Is Provigil prescribed with MAOIs ? or more precisely with RIMAs like Manerix/Aurorix (Moclobemide) ?
Any comments about this idea, Provigil (or even Manerix if you feel to) ?
Thanks a lot
Marty

Hey there Marty
I tried moclobemide a few weeks ago, but unfortuately I had to stop because I got a rash - my pdoc said that it might be an inflammation of the tiny blood vessels in my hands which is a rare side effect apparently. How he made this decision without actually seeing the rash I don't know, but hey.
Well I found moc to be rather stimulating, apart from the spell of dizziness 1-2hrs after a dose. I'm guessing you wouldn't need provigil after you have let the moc kick in. And its also supposed to improve cognitive functioning apparently (I did loads of reading on it before I started it).
So maybe you won't need the provigil???
Kind regards
Meri

Hi Meri-Tuuli,Just like you I had a rash the first 3 days, and it was all over my body. Now seems okay.
The Moclo has kicked yesterday night, and yes, it's pretty much activating... I don't see the 'Gentle' in "Gentle Maoi". As of now it's more activating for me that was Parnate! So you seems to be right.. Provigil, in this condition, would be over-kill.
Being (supposedly) bipolar 2, I fear hypomania on moclo.. the stimulation makes me gives me a subtle feeling of hypomania.. like the tip of.. and that scares me. But not enough to stop de treatment.
Even if I feel moclo is more activating that I though, my questions remains since from what I read the effects tend to fade with time and you need to increase the dose; which I would prefer not do.. if it happens, I would prefer join Provigil to the party :)
Thanks for answering, hope you're doing well.

Hiya Marty!
Can you tell me more about the rash please Marty? What did it look like? Was it itchy?
I'm pretty peed that I had to stop it because of my rash. I mean, on the insert in the packet, it says that the rash is a side effect along with dizziness etc. It isn't under the 'call your doc immediately/go to ER' bit, so you would assume that rash would be okay...
So, how do you know when a rash is a 'normal' side effect, or when it is dangerous??
I have to admit, I really liked the feel of moc. It gave me much much needed energy and just the motivation to actually do things. Although I have to admit, I freaked out at the first dizzy spell I had! I also got a tightness in my chest (is this heartburn - I've never had heartburn beofre so I don't know what it feels like!) , some fuzzy headaches. And it felt similar to reboxetine, a noradrenaline med. Moc was great for panic. And when anxiety crept in, it let me sort of ride through the anxiety instead of giving in to it.
Are you taking it with anything else?
kind regards
Meri

Hi.
> And it felt similar to reboxetine
What was your experience with reboxetine? Why did you discontinue it?
Thanks.

Hi Scott
A friend of mine on Reboxetine said it made him feel bigger/more substantial, which I guess means more confidant. I asked him if it made him feel nervous and he said it hadn't.

Hi Scott!
I started reboxetine last summer - I'm sure if you search the archives you'll find my experiences on it - I posted them here.
Basically, reboxetine was great for panic but didn't really have any influence on my mood, although perhaps it did give me more energy. My friends told me I was pretty grumpy. Other than that, it made my heart beat 'more strongly' is the only way I could put it, and it must have messed with my hormones, because I found it easy to lose weight, my periods stopped, and it gave me bad acne.
So I gave it up. I wasn't taking anything else with it at the time, although I was taking a *tiny* amount of celexa (<5mg) as I was weaning off and then I stopped the celexa and continued on with the reboxetine for a few weeks.
With moc, I got the same feeling as when I was on reboxetine with regard to panic. I'll try and describe it - when you would normally get a shot of adrenaline in 'panic' situations eg tripping over etc or in a panic attack, you'd get this weird giddy feeling instead and you wouldn't feel the adrenaline pumping.
Hope this helps somehow.
Kind regards
Meri

Hi Meri-Tuuli
> Can you tell me more about the rash please Marty? What did it look like? Was it itchy?
It was pretty much ichy and when scratch was becoming pink/red. Take not that my skin as a tendency to turn red easily when scratched. Initially, it was almost all over the body, now I sometimes scratch myself without noticing it and then it becomes a rash spot.. Anecdotely, as I write this, the more I think about it the more I feel the need to scratch myself :S
Another interesting thing about my case is that I take Lamictal (Lamotrigine) which is known to sometimes cause rash, sometime very bad rash named Steven-Johnson Syndrome. My rash started with Moclo so it's not Lamictal.
> Are you taking it with anything else?
Moclo 150mg 2xDay
Lamictal 150mg BID
Risperdal .5mg

Hey there Marty
Thanks for the reply. Well my rash wasn't itchy and it was confined to my knuckles/hands. I've no idea if this means it was that weird, rare, tiny capillaries being inflammed thing, or if it was a more beign side effect.
I'll ask my pdoc tomorrow. I doubt he'll know the answer!
Thanks again,
Kind regards
Meri
PS you're making me feel itchy now!! LOL!!!

> MartyHi Marty, I don't know about RIMA'S but I take 300-400 provigil with the EMSAM and have no interactions. My pdoc said it was a 'caution" with MAOI's but I have had no problem at all.
I am not nearly as sleepy as Iused to be, I take it mostly as a mood enhancer now. Besides, it never helped much with my excessive daytime sleepiness when I was on SRI's.Donna
