Can Cymbalta and Zoloft be taken together???

Posted by addinbc on May 4, 2006, at 9:33:00

Can one safely take Cymbalta and Zoloft together?

Zoloft basically puts a stop to my anxiety and difficulties sleeping. However, it tends to make me a bit numb and makes me sleep too much.

Cymbalta is giving me energy (I am obviously depleted in norepinephrine), but is making me anxious and I can't sleep.

Therefore, I was hoping to be able to take the two together. Is this safe?

Thanks!!

Oh, and just to add...

I am currently taking a very small dose of the Cymbalta. Still working on how much to take, but in the area of 2-5mg.

Thanks.

Yeah, you can combine zoloft and cymbalta. I mean, a doctor would think it's pretty weird, but if it helps you feel better, ya know?

If you end up working up to a much higher dose of cymbalta than you are taking now though, you want to google "serotonin syndrome" and be on the lookout for symptoms so you can stop it early. I have no idea what dose would put you in that danger zone. Might be 20mg, might be 30mg, don't know.

I took micro-doses of cymbalta along with 20mg prozac about 6 months ago. I'm sure that would have been ok longterm. I took up 30mg of it, but just for one day, with the prozac. I bet if I had stuck with that I would have run into problems.

Someone here took a mix of regular dose prozac and regular dose effexor a few years ago and did well on it for months, until it pooped out like all the other ones that person had tried.

I have been taking Cymbalta for about five weeks, and have felt nothing. So my doctor today perscribed Zoloft too. So, now i"m taking both. I'm concerned about this, but at this point I'll try anything. Has anyone ever taken this combination?

taking a SNRI with an SSRI is not the best idea as there is a potential for a little thing called serotonin syndrome & that can kill you. The small one time dose is not an indication of safety as these drugs tend to build in your system over time. Prozac has a very long half life & is eliminated very very slowly. This means that the drug will continue to build in you system for as much as a month to get to a steady level in your body. both SNRI's & SSRI's boost serotonin levels & when taking a SSRI people should not take anyother drug or suppliment that boosts serotonin levels & I believe the same goes for SNRI's. That includes the suppliments L-Tryptophan or any of its derivatives.

Thanks for posting this subject...I have been taking cymbalta for about two months now...from 60mg/day down to 30mg/day. I had an issue with extreme nausea, and although that has disappeared with the dose reduction, I am still very tired...and wanted to piggy-back with my zoloft (that I used to take). The zoloft gave me a lot more energy, but the cymbalta really helps with the body aches and pains...so I'm going to try it...thanks.
