Tonalin-Does Anyone Have any Info???

Posted by Paul on Long Island on May 7, 2006, at 12:26:56

Hi, all. I had previously asked if anyone knew of any way to avoid weight gain while on Prozac, which I'm going back on next week, assuming I survive until then. Phillipa mentioned something called Tonalin, but she said she really didn't know anything about it. Has anyone heard of it? Had any experience with it? Is it a prescription medication or an otc supplement type of thing? Also, are there any side effects? Thanks...Paul

Paul,
Tonalin is one of these giimicks for losing weight. There's something called the Federal Register for some products sold over the counter. They divide products into 1(safe and effective 2} non effective, but safe 3} non safe and non effective. I'm not sure of it's exact classification as far as safety, but it's non effective.

I understand topamax is very hard to tolerate. Loss of cognitive function. Have you at least given it a try? I'm not certain as to whether it interferes with your diagnosis. I don't like asking anyone perosnal information.

Absolutely OTC. Tonalin is a trademarked name for a manufactured fatty acid product. I'd expect that the formula used is patented, as well.

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is the Tonalin claim to fame. Nutural CLA is found in milk, as an example, but this stuff is man-made. Take a vegetable oil, react it a bit, and you get CLA.

There is some limited evidence that some of the artificial, and one of the natural, isomers of this fatty acid influence metabolic rates. The man-made actually works better than the natural, in this instance.

Is it enough to affect body weight? Maybe. For some people, it might make a visible difference.

Far more efficacious is guarding the intake valve. Your mouth. Watch what you put in there. Exercise more than you eat.

I know that some drugs are notorious for causing weight gain. In some cases, we've able to understand why that happens (some of the atypical antipsychotics do it). For the SSRIs, one person might lose weight while his buddy gains, on the same dose, and same food intake.

Life isn't fair.

If Prozac makes you gain weight, and that is an unacceptable consequence of your treatment, then you should investigate other drugs. That would be my advice to you.
