I've been taking Parnate for the past 6 months and it has helped relieve a lot of my symptoms of depression (atypical depessive symptoms), but it has increasingly affected my sleep to the point that sleep aids are no longer working. (I've tried a variety!) Prior to Parnate, I had no insomnia, but now it's getting unbearable. I'm considering switching to Emsam- although I know some people have insomnia with Emsam as well, does anyone know if it's less severe with Emsam than with Parnate? My other concern is that Ensam won't be as effective with energy- which is a significant symptom of my depression. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Hi Blackcat
Prior to Emsam the idea seemes to be that in terms of stimulation selegiline > Parnate > Nardil (dunno about Marplan). (I doubt the patch would work for me. I find 1mg/d sublingual deprenyl (first thing in the morning) disturbs my sleep, and I imagine the patch would be worse). It might depend on the relative doses of Parnate vs Emsam. I think the patch should be OK for energy, but some people have found it tiring. Could it be more stimulating at lower doses?

This whole ENSAM patch is confusing the heck out of me. I've gotten E-mails telling me it's the last resort before ECT and that conventional AD's are better for me. What exactly is stimulating if you are already anxious that that is was your main diagnosis. This trying to decide now I'm sleeping till 11am and still anxious although I don't want to do anything. Can someone solve this mystery for me please. Love Phillipa ps it's depressing me

I really don't know what to do here! Last night, I laid in bed all night until I finally fell asleep at 8am this morning. I just woke up now (at 3pm). I took 3 mg of Lunesta at 2am.
My sleep has gotten worse and worse- even when I force myself to stay awake all day without sleep, I still have insomnia at night. I have law school exams next week and I have to straighten this out! After the tests, I'm seriously considering trying Emsam to see if it helps my sleep be more regular. This is really horrible!

Though I never tried parnate, EMSAM has significantly improved my energy, mood and mental clarity, but not increased anxiety which is my primary disorter.
I have noticed there are nights I got a little less sleep, more dreaming, but still woke up with good energy.
I don't think you'll know the answer unless you decide to try it. One thing that I've noticed though is that some seem to have more inital side effects when swiching from one anti depressant/ other MAOI to EMSAM and I suspect that has to do with your body adusting to the withdraw of one while adjusting to EMSAM. When I started EMSAM I was only taking a benzo and had washed out all other meds for a long period of time, perhaps that helped.
There are a few here that were in the initial EMSAM study that are now just starting up with EMSAM again. They said when the stopped the patch and went to oral selegiline it didn't work well for them so it would seem that you can't compare the two.
Anyway, everyone is different. Just my take. Seems the only way to see if any of these meds will work is by trial and error. Good luck Rob

Yep parnate does do that!!I stated here recently that a problem i have with it is i get afternoon fatigue where i can barly stand not napping, then come 11pm BANG im up,and everyone is going to bed and i feel really empty lonly all that stuff.
Dident matter what NON medicational techniques i tried,i did not sleep at night! So i deceided to embrace it,became a night owl,and a big ADULTSWIM fan lol.Problem was in the morning what to do,sleep or take parnate? If i took parnate i was maniac with no sleep.
Tried lunesta, reaced badly to it,even tried the other on o forget its name. Then finaly i got ambien, and now KNOCK ON HOLY WOOD one least problem i have is sleep at night.I also find stragnly never to take a whole tab at once, ill take partial ambien, and perhaps the smallest pieace of a benzo and i sleep. If need be ill wait and THEN approx 40 min after ill take the other part of ambien, why? Well seems taking the entire tab atimualtes me,go figure.
But all i can say is with all truth is since ive been using ambien i have been able to go to sleep.
Its one less problem, now when i see everyone going to bed,i dont mind staying up an hr later cause i know i can go to bed also and wont be up roaming the hose at night, alone.
Its been well over a month and dont see any escaltion in the the dose, maybe cause i choose not to take the entire tab,i dunno i have a friend who takes 2 or three and it no longer works for him.
With ambien this is exactly what happens,i wake once in the night, get up go to the bathroom have a drink etc,and go back to bed,and i fall asleep.Id look into it,i personaly found no other way to deal with the insomnia brought on by parnate.

I can handle the worst depression that can be thrown at me.......what i cant handle is the lose of hope, and with the patch not looking too great as a viable option, and still from reading around hearing im already on the what is highly condisdered the most potent Anti depressant,my hope is obviously dwindled a lot, when u have some of the best or most recomended drugs for the condition....i.e xyrem, klonopin, xanax, parnate and you still struggle well hope so now further than an arm reach away.If anyone has ever read my posts on other groups, seen my homepages where i dont mention none of this, and spoke to me via messagner they would know i never self loathed before,i mean i had my night or two but overall i was agressive in fighting it and had some form of content.
The self pity and loathing is what scares me the most,i never felt this way.My family never understood,or my close friends, from day one i know they believe if i just left the house,or did this or that, its just obvious they dont know, and maybe it is pathetic but i want some sympathy,i have never gotten any form of sympathy from my family at all, this could be partialy my fault as i dont complian but instead stay to myself, but latly i have and there seems to be a total lack of sympathy, normaly i wouldent care or want it.
All i know is if my brother, mom or dad was telling me they were in pain from something which they have,id be asking them morning night how they ffelt, when they walked in id ask,id learn about what they were dealing with,ah i dont wanna be one of those people that complain,i see a new doc soon, who knows least i know enough to have built my self an aresnal of emergency which i have.
Im 27 though,i should not know what dopamine is,i should be chasing girls and shooting pool lol,i have gotten a lot better at who i let in though, unless ur family or can offer me something,u dont deserve to know something that personal about me,thats why i never mention it on webpages i make or profiles etc.

I don't know Phillipa, everyone has their own opinions on things. BTW I'm on Parnate and it's not stimulating to me. I've become very good at taking naps, lol.

Willyee I empathize with you. No one understands me either. None of grown kids want to see me or talk to me. And my husband is fed up. So I do know what it feels like. Lonely. And I tried to find a therpist just to let me let off my frustration and even she won't do it. Love Phillipa

Are you taking the Parnate late in the afternoon or evening? I cannot take my last dose much past 3:00 or I won't be able to sleep. Otherwise, I sleep ok.
Just a thought since no one else mentioned not taking Parnate in the evening.
This is the end of the thread.
