Well, unfortunately I've had to discontinue my parnate due to just too many untoward side effects that weren't being balanced by benefit. I'm so happy it has been working well for Tyler and others out there, and wish it might have worked the same for me, but it just wasn't the case. The daily "rush then crash" routine was affecting my life pretty significantly, enough that I often couldn't be productive at all at home after work due to pure fatigue. I jacked the dose up to 80mg/day through week 3, but in the end just ended up being more anxious overall. I'm glad I have it a try, and would certainly recommend others consider it as well if circumstances warrant. It has worked wonders for me many, both for depression and social anxiety.
As I washout from the parnate, I'm finally giving daily Klonopin a chance for my social anxiety. I've used it prn for years for anticipated social events but was left with nothing on the "off" days when even minor social situations would inevitably occur. So starting last Thursday as I took my final dose of parnate, I started with Klonopin 1mg bid. I've always knows of its powerful benefit for social anxiety, but was worried the effect would wane with daily usage. But as so many on this board have stated, this just doesn't happen for most. The initial sedation (which was profound) is essentially gone yet the anxiolytic effect remains strong. I truly love Klonopin and what it does for me, and I hope it will continue to work indefinitely.
And who knows? Maybe a Nardil trial could be in my near future as well. My Pdoc and I agree this may be worth a shot eventually, but for now we're going with the Vitamin "K!"
Thanks for all the support provided to one another. Take care!

> RJHey Rocket,
We've been wondering about you. Sorry Parnate didn't work out for you...but there are many other choices. Check out the above post on EMSAM, this guy is having a really good start on the MAOI patch. Maybe EMSAM would be a good choice for you. Also, you mentioned Nardil, many people who don't do well on Parnate do very well on Nardil and vise versa. While you decide what your going to do, the Klonopin will keep you going-it's an excellent drug.
I wish you all the best my friend, and please keep your head up, there will be a better med for you than parnate was, it just takes time to find it. God Bless and stay in touch with us.Sincerely, Tyler

I have had great luck with klonopin (2mgs night). I have taken it for 12 years. Though I am now adding EMSAM for dsythima, klonopin even as mono therapy really tackled my social and generalized anxiety, I was definately functional.
The sedation went away, but not the anti anxiety benefits. No tolerance to it, never have had to increase dose. You can get off it if you ever decide to, just take your time. I did once, but my old social anxiety returned, so I didn't waste much time before starting again.
Finding the right dose is key, play with it till you settle in on what feels best. Seems most take between 1 and 5 mgs for anxiety disorters. Some split doses, others don't, again, I'd play with that. I think there's reason to be very optimistic. I wish you the best. Rob

I'm curious as to why your doctor didn't start you with Nardil - Nardil is the MAOI of choice for anxiety, whereas Parnate is the MAOI of choice for depression.

It was a tough decision, but, based on parnate's different side effect profile and variable efficacy (many positive results with his patients) for social anxiety, we went with the parnate. Specifically, I was concerned with the almost universal weight gain as well as sexual side effects... both of which seem to occur less often with parnate. And while the amphetamine-like metabolites of parnate definitely contributed to major appetite suppression, I still suffered from some problems "down south," which my wife wasn't always a big fan of. :)
Having said this, Nardil is still a strong possibility for the future. I'll washout the parnate, go with Klonopin for a while, and then reassess. Fortunately my Pdoc is pretty open to suggestions.
Best of luck!

I have a theory that a person is either a Parnate person or a Nardil person. So you should give Nardil a go in the very near future!
