Posted by bart on March 14, 2006, at 15:17:44

anyone familiar with Soma and whether or not it's a good treatment for muscle pain and/or fatigue associated with taking Phentermine?
Is it good for anxiety?

I used it for back pain and renamed it "coma"-I don't think it did any good, but then, I was asleep.

I've only heard of it in Huxley's work.
And i'm feeling too crumby to look it up.
But it is a name that should have been
reserved for the perfect AD drug.

In the words of Millhouse "Sorry Bart"

Don't know why I didn't respond to your question the first time.

Anyways a lot of people seem to like Soma

Personally it feels like a kind of Dirty Downer to me.
Good for sleep, but makes me feel a bit depressed.

The only reason I take it is that its so hard to get Benzo's in the UK

Is Soma a benzo? Benzos are addictive
but the problem with them is mostly
withdrawal and tolerance build-up.
They may be misused, but I don't know
of any substitute for taking someone down
from anxiety, except alcohol and perhaps
any other sedatives.

I think there are extreme views on them
and that is more a political matter than
a medical one.

Personally, I would say the *withdrawal* causes
more suffering than the addiction if
the dose is not raised. But if it raised
indefinitely, death may occur.

The question i would ask if i were a medical
person, would be "why does this person have
perpetual anxiety?" and what is the best
way to treat it. Because benzos for the occasional anxiety (with the exception of K)
are a very good thing. But perpetual anxiety
is another medical problem possibly not related
to psychiatry but endocrinology (affecting the
brain of course).

Im sorry you made me laugh. Hahaha

Yes bart, soma, somo, sumu, what ever you want to call it ROFL is a muscle relaxer that eventually is metabolized into Meprobamate an old tranquilzer back in the 50's (Miltown) and you get an antianxiety effect from it in a couple hours. Wierd.

Thats all i know about it.

I know that Charles Medwar has some really
nasty things to say about it in his book
"Power and Dependence" - dirty indeed;

Cool?

---It's way to strong to be a daily type drug. I think from my experience with it, it is best used just for a specific muscle injury for a limited time period.

Lots of professional athletes have become addicted or died from escalating dosage. As for anxiety, it is as good, and probably as harmful, as several beers.

Soma - Carisoprodol » Phillipa

Soma, Carisoprodol, is a muscle relaxant that in the body metabolizes to meprobamate, Miltown, an old line anxiety agent. Miltown is distantly structurally or related to barbiturates although it is not one directly.

Its the only agent that ever corrected some of my really tough muscle tension but I can't use it because of my benzodiazepine load. So I use Robaxin, which happens to be a somewhat newer distant cousin of Soma.

Soma and Robaxin never did anything for me as muscle relaxants as I could not tolerate side effects so I could never take much of a daytime dose. No antianxiety effects noticed with them.

So far Lyrica is helping with my very difficult to treat tight muscles and has a nice, antianxiety effect. I've got to watch the dose, however, due to unsteadiness which has me wobbling all over the place. Had to lower it to 75mg during the day, 150mg at night. Good sleep adjunct with Klonopin.

Bart, I took it for a while to help with back pain. I think it's similar to flexeril (sp?)
I found that it helped somewhat, but it was a pretty weak drug and not a true muscle relaxant.

warm regards Jake

Its only similar in category.. Flexeril is a yucky side-effect filled medicine related to tricyclic antidepressants, at least in my trials. But as they say your miles may vary. Soma itself can be very powerful especially at high doses considering its metabolite. If only I could have it instead of its actual related cousin Robaxin... but I digress again. There are about 4 or 5 muscle relaxing drugs, almost none of them are particularly related except the two I mentioned above, as far as I know.
