I posted in the newbie section but thought maybe I would get a better answer over here. I got hit by drunk driver in November of 2005 and had multiple physical injury, along with being diaognosed with TBI and PTSD. The pain meds they gave me vicodin and valuim for muscle spams, really did nothing for me and PT was the only thing that has helped along with a TENS unit. Still in great pain but I am getting along. Now with the other issues they started me on Zoloft worked me up to 50mg but I was having alot of gastric problems, I have since been sent to a neuropsychiatrist and he perscribed Effexor xr 37.5mg for a week and then 75mg daily, along with zyprexa 2.5 mg at night. I am still having problems with this combo too. Night Sweats, still night terrors, dizziness, extreme nausea etc... I am very sensitive to medications and I am not sure I will be able to take any of the drugs of choice for my issues. I have explained to the doc that I am trying to comply but when the drugs make things worse, and also make me feel OUT OF IT, that is worse for me because I have a 5 year old child to consider. I start trauma therapy this week and I am hoping that this will help. I do have alot of stress right now because I have lost my job, my health insurance and we were a two income family so yes there is stress but when these meds make me feel so sick I do not see how they are going to help me. I felt better when I was on the 2mg of Valuim, and I know they do not like to perscribe it because of the addiction issues but I DID NOT HAVE ANY NIGHT TERRORS when I was using it for a muscle relaxor and I slept very well. The panic attacks are still present. I could use some helpful advice on how to explain to the doc that I want to heal but I can't feeling like this all the time. It's going to be a long road for my family but to compromise it with feeling sick all the time? ANY SUGGESTIONS?

wow...you're having a rough time. SOrry :-)
Valium isn't prescribed much in the US anymore, but other benzos are...its perfectly reasonably for you to try out Klonopin or Ativan (possibly Tranxene, Librium, or xanax) if you're having a rough time. The whole "addiction" thing is really overblown, and you're clearly having problems w/ your currently RX'd meds.Personally, I think you need something for sleep that isn't Zyprexa (thats used more for schizophrenia and bipolar). You could use Ambien, Restoril, other benzos (klonopin, ativan, xanax, valium), Lunesta..just not an antipsychotic. You might want to ask your doc what he's doing with you on an antipsychotic.
You might want to try out a mood-stabilizer. I like Trileptal OK--it calms you down w/o weight gain or making you stupid. Also, BuSpar might be an option; its designed for anxiety, but it can help with depression, too...the bad news is that you could get side effects and it takes about 7 days to help with anxiety, and about 1 month to fully kick in.
Good luck!

Thank you for the reply. I guess the reasoning of the zyprexa was to eliminate the thoughts of the trauma which they told me it does. WELL ISN'T WORKING. I am now in a conflict with my Neurologist because she wants me on Prednisone and believe me if there would be a need for me to use an anti psychotic drug JUST PUT ME ON THE PREDNISONE THEY WOULD SEE PSYCHOTIC REAL QUICK. Today is a very bad pain day and I am waiting for the call to see what new and WONDEROUS things they are going to perscribe this time. ARRRR! I hate trying to explain to these practitioners what works for me and what does not and then they assume it's because YOU LIKE PARTICULAR DRUGS, well no I don't LIKE any of them but some work better for me than others, and being somone with a very limited medication history it really angers me that they do not listen. I think maybe when they finally send me to the Neuorsurgeon things will look up at least with the physical injuries, I SURE HOPE SO, and I think to once I build a good working relationship with my therapist and Neuropsychiatrist things will be looking up in that department to. It's just so hard when you don't know if you are going crazy from the pain or from the PTSD. Sorry I just had to rant a bit. Thanks for listening.

Zoloft was given to my Son for PTSD along with ativan. This combo worked well for him. Good luck. Fondly, Phillipa
