Hi,
Has anyone with paranoid and psychotic symptoms found that their symptoms get worse on antipsychotics and better on ADs?
Thanks.

Hi Nellie
Can you describe the paranoid/psychotic symptoms a bit more?
Thanks

It's just my guess that the extra serotonin from the ADs squashes down the excess dopamine that's causing the symptoms. Antipsychotics block dopamine receptors, but only some of the receptors, and not that strong. But they also stimulate dopamine release at the same time. Sometimes the stimulation might be stronger than the blockade, depending on the person's unique brain wiring.
Antidepressants have always been, for me, better at calming and mood stabilization than any antipsychotic or mood stabilizer. Now if they only worked that good for depression I would be all set.

Anything but luvox ups my anxiety. You are fortunate. Fondly, Phillipa

I read a study once that showed the citalopram was actually as effective in schitsophrenia as a leading antipsychotic.
If it is psychotic depression, an antidepressant alone may be better than an antipsychotic alone.

Mine get better with AD's (SSRI's).
AP's make them worse, though.
Been there, done that...I'm Bipolar II (or NOS), ultra-rapid/ultradian cycling. I have OCD, social phobia, and most likely Aspergers Syndrome as well.

I feel that I am being followed and that people are hiding something from me which would make me feel very guilty if I knew (or rather, more than I already do). APs make me more depressed and citalopram, as linkadge mentioned, works best for those symptoms.

Some people find that APs aggravate their anxiety. SSRIs can be effective for anxiety, perhaps your paranoia has improved due to a general reducation in anxiety?

Yes, anxiety and depression. Thanks for your thought.
Nellie.
