I've been taking Parnate for about four months now and I found (shockingly) that it reduced my delusional-type Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Since there is only one case study in the literature about Parnate and BDD, I was wondering if anyone had heard of this as being an effective treatment? (As far as I thought, it was JUST SSRIs, SSNRIs, and Clomipramine that could treat BDD).
Since I still have some peripheral symptoms, my doctor and I are going to try higher doses (I'm currently taking 70 mgs a day) to see if higher doses are more effecive for this, as with the other medications that are used for BDD.
I'm just wondering if anyone else had heard of this or if it even makes pharmacological sense.

My guess is that, since no one really knows what causes BDD, no one can answer your question definitively.
Which won't stop me from answering your post, of course...
This is a guess, but BDD may respond to antidepressants because of the reduction in distress symptoms they provide. It's probably the non-specific improvement in affect that's involved, rather than any specific effects on the disorder itself. You know, "I'm not so depressed, so my nose/boobs/knees/whatever don't seem like such a big deal to me anymore." Does that make sense? Do you think that could be part of what you're experiencing?
As for treatment by raising the dose, I wouldn't think that would clear up the residual symptoms, but that's just a guess from someone who knows little about it. My guess, though, is that the effective dose for depression will alleviate a certain proportion of your symptoms, and the rest would require psychotherapy to resolve.
Hope those musings help.

I'm not entially supprised that Parnate was effective for your BDD
I suspect that if enoughth trials were performed MAOIs would prove just, if not more affective than SSRIs and Clomipramine for many disorders
Trouble is there out of fashion and off patent!
Just my opinion
I'm glad your getting relief anyway!

Have you ever tried any of the APs for it? They're used in eating disorders, to reduce some of the problems faced during treatment. Maybe one of them would help you with the BDD?
And have you tried psychotherapy at all?

BDD seems to respond to anti-obsessional drugs, such as fluoxetine (Prozac). BDD often resembles OCD.

I tried three antipsychotics with BDD.... Quetiapine , Olanzapine ,and seroquel.
I put on weight and started to wory about that instead of my forehead.Maybe they would have helped if they hadn't altered my appearance?.
