Seroquel

Posted by LinnieLoo55 on January 18, 2006, at 13:49:35

Anyone on Seroquel and how are you doing on it? It took a long time to adjust to this medication. I did it my way by starting at 25mg for a week and upped it 25mg more each week until I reached 100mg. My doctor wanted me to start on 100mg, I thought she was nuts because I tried this medication before and only lasted about 5 days on it. This time I gave it a try because I was so tired of all the mood swings I had. I have found that it has helped with my depression where as no antidepressant has ever helped me very much and it has really controled my mood swings. I am still tired in the morning and have to go back to bed in a few hours but I think that I'm just a tired person in general and need extra sleep. I still do take a antidepressant, lexapro 30mg but adding the seroquel to it has made a big difference. I only have very few depressed moods now. Let me hear from anyone that is taking this.

I'm just restarting it. I was last prescribed it over a year ago (?) and I didn't last long either...Will let you know how it goes again. I too am tired of mood swings and terrible insomnia. I also take Adderall 5mg 2-3x/day for ADHD.

Best of luck to YOU and take it easy...

I take 60 mg Prozac and 25 mg Seroquel a day. Previously I was just on the Prozac. Adding the Seroquel made all the difference in the world. Night and Day difference. I've seriously thought of writing a thank you letter to Astra-Zeneca (makers of Seroquel). It's been very helpful, I would say possibly lifechanging.

I've only been on it for 12 days but I could tell the improvement right away.

I also take adderall 30mg once a day. I use to take 20mg two times a day but my new doctor won't call my insurance company to get a OK. Do you crash on the adderall? I do, it only last about 6 hours and then I start to get anxiety and my head gets foggy and I can no longer focus on anything.

I'm not taking a high enough dose to *really* crash...only 5mg twice a day now...I'm supposed to take 10mg 3x/day. I'm being cautious. Don't get me wrong, Adderall does help a lot, but if and only if I'm NOT sleep deprived. I'm going on 48 hours of no sleep...So, as you can imagine, I'm really looking forward to getting a full nights sleep! I'm soo tired and very very out of it today (and I'm at work now God help me). I'm starting to blurt out stupid things & becoming disinhibited. Anyway, I can't focus on jack. Keep us updated on how you're doing, okay? Later...

The improvement I noticed was first of all in terms of insomnia. I was able to sleep a full eight hours and fall asleep with 15 minutes.

I stopped having uncharacteristic thoughts about sex and substance use.
I also was able to concentrate at work. I also don't neglect household chores anymore, like cleaning, paying bills, washing the car etc.

I'm just happier, and more outgoing, and it's not that edgy Prozac "I can conquer the world" feeling. I can appreciate a beautiful day.

My diagnosis is Bipolar II.

I don't know exactly how to describe it, it's like the lights came on or my life makes sense now, and the glass is half full.

I actually have a measure of gratitute for being Bipolar, it can be a blessing as well as a curse. It's enabled me to be able to accomplish things I otherwise wouldn't have been able to.

Like hold down a job by working my *ss off when I'm hypomanic in order to compensate for the down times when I accomplish nothing.

Not to rain on anyone's parade - but my doctor put me on Seroquel about 2-3 years ago for insomnia and within the first year I gained 100 pounds and am now pre-diabetic. Yeah it helps me sleep - but I've slept for 48 hours on a single dose. I can't wait to get off it.

I'm sorry to hear that much weight gain. It does mess with the lipids in your system and can raise cholesterol and one has to watch what one eats, but that's an enormous amount of weight gain, far exceeding what I had on Remeron. Sleep contributes because you don't burn much calories while asleep. Zyprexa is usually much more of a contributor than Seroquel, but as your experience shows, it differs for some, sometimes those who started underweight to begin with.

I've found the best thing with Seroquel is to take it at night, consistently, several hours before you actually are asleep, and then its easier (not the easiest) to stay awake in the morning, even after 900mgs. Of course I don't always adhere to that schedule and when I don't, I can sleep into the afternoon, which isn't particularly good for me.

HI!

I currently take 300mg. I've had success at 150mg for insomnia - but I have periods of very tough insomnia - thus the 300mg.

I find that my eating gets out of control after I take it in the evenings. I am eating so much junk food and can't stop. I know that I have gained weight but won't weigh myself. What's up with this medication. It is helping me so much but I don't want to gain the weight. I'm fine during the day it's just after I take the medication I get out of control.

Why haven't you slept for 48 hours?? What kind of work do you do? The seroquel helps me sleep through the night or I wouldn't sleep at all. I use to take risperdal. I have started a new medication called Revia.

Could you wait and take it right before going to bed? So you won't have a chance for the hunger to hit?

I assume the naltrexone (Revia) is for alcohol/opiate abuse.

Your experience with Seroquel sounds like my experience with Trazodone in the past. You have to fight that urge to open the fridge. Taking it right before bed, for me, does nothing, as the Seroquel itself takes up to 2 hours to take effect. It might be sooner for you. But whenever that "dopiness" starts kicking in from the Seroquel that's the sign to hit the hay. That's the only way I believe you're going to regulate nighttime snacking. It's not your fault, the medication triggers antihistamine receptors, which say, "me hungry."

Can't you get your doctor to give you something to sleep. I use to be just like that and I was going crazy without sleep. It's gotten like I need meds to keep me awake during the day and meds to make me sleep at night. I'm tired of the whole thing. It gets very depressing.

I've been on topamax but had to many side effects. I'll ask about the zonegran. The seroquel has helped allot with my depression but I'm feeling not real good today, I worry because I think the medication is going to stop working. I don't know if I have it in me to go through another severe depression.

If I don't take it around 8pm, it stays in my system to long and then I am so tired the next day. I just have to get control. I take 100mg.

Most of the day I don't feel real well in my stomach. So I don't eat allot during the day. I think the seroquel is making feel sick during the day. It doesn't make sense because when I take it at night within 30mins I start to get hungry then I'm having trouble with throwing up in my sleep. The Revia is used for cutters also. At least they are trying it. I don't want to take it unless I have a episode. I've been sober for 10 years.
