Can you tell me about Geodon

Posted by christinav on January 18, 2006, at 14:27:36

I have a hard time with meds. Either i am really sensitive or they work the opposite. So i have anxiety and my doctor talked to me about geodon. I need feedback on this medication. If any one can help me that would be great. Thank you. christina

If you're sensitive to antipsychotics, you will probably experience akathisia with Geodon, it is up there with Abilify though not as strong as Risperdal. On the other hand, some people don't experience that. So its worth a trial. You should probably have some propranolol or an anticholinergic like Akineton or Artane on hand in case you do get this nasty "must move" feeling that isn't quite anxiety and is hard to describe unless you've experienced it before.

Zyprexa and Seroquel are much less strong in that direction though they still have their own side effects.

I'm not sure why your doctor is leaning toward this antipsychtotic instead of zyprexa or seroquel. With sensitivity to side effects, I personally would have gone for zyprexa. I've heard of a lot of people doing well with zyprexa or seroquel, but hardly any with geodon. Geodon has some serotonin agonism to it, and some serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibition to it, all of which are likely to increase anxiety before they have a chance to work and reduce it longer term. Zyprexa or seroquel don't have those complicated mechanisms and usually work right away.

What about the benzos? Xanax? Klonopin? Valium? That to me seems like a more straight forward uncomplicated inexpensive way to treat anxiety and have minimal side effects compared to other meds. Sure, the doc would probably worry about dependence or addiction. But honestly, I had a harder time reducing dosage of zyprexa or paxil than I did xanax.

The first time I took Geodon it worked like magic (for my bipolar).
However soon, very soon I began to have akathisia and it keep getting worst and worst.
I took Cogentin (benztropine) to help the akathisia then the Congentin made my eyes dilate to the point I could not see so I had to stop both the Congentin and Geodon.
I have been on Geodon several times since and I have never gotten the "magic" like response from it but nor have I had the bad akathisia from it, only just a small amount.
I've also been on Abilify a few times at low mgs and had some akathisia from it as well.

I cant take xanax or anything in that class because i have the opposite reaction to them. Yes my doctor wont put me on vallium because of addiction. I am at loss and feel hopeless of meds out there. I did not get the geodon filled and i probably wont either. I will talk to my doctor about the zyprexa and see what he says. I am just so damn tired of being so sensitive to meds and having opposite reastions to them. I HATE ANXIETY!!!!!

Cogentin is the worst offender of atropine toxicity for management of akathisia.

I would start with medium dose propranolol or low dose benzodiazepines; if they don't cover it then I would rather try the anticholinergics Akineton (biperiden) or Artane (trihexyphenidyl) which are much less offensive in the belladonna-like direction (dilation.) Also only use enough of the anticholinergic as possible. It builds up in the body and although the urge to take more doses may be there, it may take a while to eliminate, causing an atropine toxicity buildup before one realizes it. Loopiness can result.
