Anyone else on Ambien CR?

Posted by tygereyes on December 26, 2005, at 21:38:06

I'm taking 12.5 mgs at night - it's working beautifully. Far superior to Lunesta. I'm just afraid it's going to stop working, like most sleep meds seem to. But I sleep through the night and have very minimal side effects (some daytime tiredness and headaches) and overall, am finding it a very good sleeping pill. Anyone else?

So it's better than lunesta may ask pdoc for it as I'm having a horrible time sleeping. Even the valium isn't working well. Do you think it will work better? Fondly, Phillipa

Just started two nights ago. So far so good. It's better for me than lunesta. I'll report back if anything other than better sleep takes place.

Hi James

Tell us how it goes. I think Ambien CR is interesting because one of the main problems with 'traditional' Ambien is its short duration of action..... leading to waking up during the night etc.

How do you find traditional Ambien?

Traditional Ambien worked well for me for many years. May have been some placebo effect, or may have just been what my brain needed. Waking too early or being unable to get back to sleep only happened when I was extemely depressed. I know Ambien was supposed to be tolerance inducing, but I could still feel it 20 minutes after I took it, for several years. I only stopped it because I stopped everything for a while. When I suggested to gp I needed something again she tried Lunesta -nope, not for me. My new pdoc got me the Ambien CR.

I'm going to repeat the warning I give everyone when discussing Ambien. Go right to bed. The hypnotic effect can go weird. Especially if you had some alcohol.

sweet dreams,
James K

Hi James

IMO, Ambien is probably slightly less likely to be associated with tolerance than Lunesta.

It sounds like standard Ambien was a good med for you. Perhaps you should return to it. Isn't Ambien CR more expensive? I'm just guessing.

Yeah it is more expensive. My meds are pretty cheap if I can get a 90 day scrip through the mail, so I'll have to see if this doc is willing to prescribe long term for controlled drugs after this initial course runs low. Other docs have, but I've just met this one.

As for getting the one that worked for me before - I'm still learning how to communicate with doctors. I tell them what's wrong and hope they give me what I want or need. Then I either take it or don't. Time is always short, I've had bad experiences before, I expect the worst from "authority figures" etc. This time around I'm trying to do things differently but it is a process still.

Hi J

Perhaps when you've got to know your new doc you'll feel comfortable asking him to switch you back to the cheaper Ambien?

Ambien CR has been working better than anything else I have used. Yes it is expensive. My insurance has a 15 unit limit per month. (The rest I pay cash). I am trying to get an exemption to the limit. They want a RX from a "sleep disorder specialist". (grinning) - I guess that would be me.
