Nervouse habits return after switching to Lex

Posted by Colleen D. on December 13, 2005, at 20:31:09

I've been on Lexapro one week.

I'm chewing my cuticles, chewing on the sides of my mouth (inside) and a few other things that have begun to become bothersome. I switched from Effexor. Could these just turn out to be start up side effects, or is Lex known for these effects in general? I thought it was primarily used for depression and GAD. And GAD is my biggest problem...hmmm. I never did these things while on Effexor!

TIA,
Colleen

Why did you change from Effexor to Lexapro? I have been pondering that same scenario. Lately I have seen an increase in my anxiety. I am possibly thinking of trying Nardil. I tried some years ago with a lot of side effects, especially GI problems but according to others, you have to give it some time. Lexapro is good but Effexor is supposed to be one of the best medications for Depression and GAD.

I could not tolerate lexapro. I tried it for a week but the twitching and anxiety were more than I could stand. Fondly, Phillipa

I've had great results with Lex for anxiety and depression - like you, with anxiety being the primary problem and depression thrown in for "fun". The first few weeks of startup were a little difficult and I experienced an upramp of anxiety. Klonopin, in an increased dose from my "usual", helped with this. After about two weeks the anxiety stuff began to ease GRADUALLY and by week four they were effectly treated and the depressive symptoms lifted. It's a great feeling but the beginning was a bit rough.

Lex has been a wonderful med for me. I've been on it for 10 months.

Hope it works out for you.

>Why did you change from Effexor to Lexapro?

Effexor seemed to be pooping out (anxiety was returning and I didn't want to increase my low dosage of Klonopin) and I was getting awful muscle spasms in my back which my doc and I finally decided mught be attributable to the Effexor. The muscle spasms are gone now!

I haven't consdiered Nardil YET.

Yep; I know this. I wish Effexor would have continued to be good for me. Thanks!

Hi Phillipa!

I hope this is not the case with me, but it could be. Maybe I need to give the Lexapro more time. Thanks!

Hi Glydin!

Thanks for the encouragement. I will give the Lex more time. I also take Klonopin so I could temorarily increase the dosage since I don't take the full dosage I was prescribed. On a ligher note, I can sleep much better on the Lex!

:-) Colleen

~~~ You are very welcome. It feels good to give encouragement.
> I will give the Lex more time. I also take Klonopin so I could temorarily increase the dosage since I don't take the full dosage I was prescribed.
~~~ Time, patience and the good use of Klonopin was really helpful for me. Once the Lex kicked it, I was able to decrease my K dose and now I don't use it often at all - this was after using it as my only med for three years. That's another reason I consider Lex a success for me. Not that I would dis K at all, it's also been good to me without pitfalls. I'm very blessed and very lucky.

> On a ligher note, I can sleep much better on the Lex!

~~~ That's a biggie. MAYBE, it's a first step of things looking better for you? Hope so....
Best,
Glydin
