i've been on zyprexa now for about 9 months. can anyone taking zyprexa tell me if they got diabetes from this drug...how could you tell. i'm noticing that i'm thirsty a LOT more than i used to be and nothing seems to cure it. and the last week or so i notice that about 2:00 or so i get weak feeling, not quite light headed but physically weak and shaky. i'm starting to take a banana or raisins to work, that seems to help.
any comments? suggestions?
i see pdoc in couple of days, i'll ask him but i don't want to sound like a hypochondriac.b2c.

No. You are very smart to be sure you aren't getting diabetes- it's one of the increasingly recognized serious side effects from taking Zyprexa. It is a wonderful drug, but the diabetes is a big problem. I almost got it, myself, in two years of Zyprexa 5 mg. per day. It's important to get monitored regularly for fasting blood sugars and signs of insulin resistance- just as important as monitoring lithium blood levels, if you are on that. Make sure you get those tests! The other AP's, like Risperdal, tend to do the same thing, but, I think, the risk of diabetes is less with those.

I don't know where you are from but there is actually lawyers on TV advertising about people getting diabetes from zyprexa. Get your sugar tested. Fasting glucose tolerance is usally the best. Good luck! Fondly, Phillipa

Fasting glucose and glucose tolerance are two different tests. The fasting glucose gives you a snapshot view of one moment in time. Glucose tolerance tells you whether your body can handle huge amounts of glucose taken in all at once, and how long it takes for that glucose to be metabolized.
Probably one of the best options for you, B2, is either a test called the A1C, which offers up a picture of whether your blood sugar has been within limits for the past three months; or -- and this would be my choice for the best option -- get yourself a blood glucose monitor, and use it regularly to get a better idea of what's happening when you experience that weakness, etc.

some great info from both of you.
i've gained so much weight from this, within the last 1 1/2 weeks i gained five pounds (and it's not from thanksgiving) i actually ate normal then, didn't overdo it.
i feel so uncomfortable. i hate this
in feb. i was 118, now i'm bouncing round 150!excercise didn't even seem to help. but schools in the way for the next couple weeks so i'm off my exercise kick.
i just feel hungry all the time (especially carbs like bread, potatoes and such) and i'm very thirsty but can't seem to get enough to drink, i get bloated but still thirsty.this s@cks!!! big time!!!
thanks for your suggestions. my pdoc mentioned that he wants me to take some blood tests, i see him friday, so i'll talk to him about this then. the bad part is the zyprexa Really seems to help.and i don't feel like experimenting with different drugs just now.
thanks again for letting me vent.
hugs

While it isn't going to fix the problem, you might get some relief both through those toothpastes/mouthwashes for dry mouth -- Biotene, I think? -- and sugar free hard candies. I get the sugary kind, the blister packs of Jolly Rancher? Disgusting, if I think about it, but they certainly do help with both the dry mouth and the urge to have something in my mouth.

I'm hating my meds entirely right now, so I can certainly empathize with you on this one. I wish there were a way I could make it better for us all.

Are the drugs working otherwise? I hope so.
