reading problems

Posted by omi1 on November 19, 2005, at 17:17:53

Hi, wondering if anybody has any ideas on the possible cause of this...

I take lamictal 75 mg and paxil 25 mg.

When I try to read recently, the words seem to dance on the page or something. I have good vision, but I can't piece together what I am trying to read.

I know what you mean. The same thing happens to me. I thought it was stress what do you think it is. It's as if my mind wants to read to words so fast they appear funny and wierd . So I don't read now it's too scarey. Fondly, Phillipa

I assume you'd been on the Lamictal & Paxil for a while before you experienced the problems?

Tell your doc about it!!

I have moments of dyslexia that seem to come more often as the years go by. And that's even when I'm not on meds. But your dyslexia sounds like it's not momentary.

Stimulants like Ritalin and Adderall help my reading enormously: focus, speed, retention, everything.

But a new development like you're describing needs to be reported.

I'm glad to hear its not just me Phillipa! I really don't know the cause, it is just wierd, cos i can type ok, and i'm usually a voracious reader.

I will tell my doc as Pseudoname suggests. I'm seeing him next week anyhow. If he has any ideas about it I'll post back here.

Wow, and I thought that just happened to me!

I think Lamictal is the culprit. I took Paxil for a year or so by itself and actually had a desire to read, and plowed through books. With anticonvulsants, this reading situation happens all the time with me. It happened with Keppra, Lamictal, Depakote and Topamax, which are all the anticonvulsants I've tried.

wow - another one.

We keep discovering new things here

This board is cool. other sufferers often seem to know far more than doctors, since they have experienced similar things.

I experienced reading problems of the kind Phillipa is describing years ago when I was getting hypomania from SSRIs.

I'm on Lamictal only at the moment and so far I've not had the problem.

I had severe problems with reading and learning when I was on Parnate. When a small amount of Ritalin was added to the Parnate, the problem wasn't quite as bad. Up until fairly recently, Parnate was considered to be the most dopaminergic antidepressant. A few weeks ago, I came across an article reporting learning impairment caused by the dopamine agonists used for Parkinson's Disease. So, I guess, like so many things, moderation is the key. Moderate amounts of dopamine can help. Too much can hurt.
