Ticked off at shrink! - Lamectil problems

Posted by TrishP on November 1, 2005, at 16:13:54

Ok - I'm just ticked off at the doc. Since my insurance has reached its limit for the year, I have to wait until next year to go back to the old doc or see a totally new one.

Anyway - I complained that my mouth was feeling funny, gums itchy, feels like sores will pop up any day now from the Lamectil.

She thinks I'm being difficult and I should continue on the Lamectil - that the itchy, slightly swollen gums will pass.

This is the reason I stopped taking Lamectil before!
Also - if I had relief from the 75mg of Effexor and it was supposedly only effecting my serotonin - maybe I should combine another ssri with Wellbutrin to get some relief?

Hey! I think you should stand up to your shrink. Its scary, but..in my experience, its well worth it. You're not in an institution or anything, so she has no right to tell YOU (an adult, with a life to live, preferably without bleeding gums) what side effects are and are not acceptable...she also doesn't have the right to tell you you're being "difficult". CHILDREN are "difficult". PATIENTS have "side-effects". This is her job, and she should do it without complaining. She might respect you more for it...for instance, I told a former shrink that I was no longer going to take a medication. He tried to convince me to take it, tried to coax me, and I just said "No. I refuse to take it anymore" He seemed a little irritated, but from that point on, he seemed to listen to me more and respect me more.

As for your meds...the wellbutrin+ssri combo does help a lot of people, and the combo can actually reduce side effects (wellbutrin minimizes sexual side effects and apathy from SSRIs; ssris minimize anxiety from wellbutrin, so on and so forth.) So...yeah, by all means, give it a whirl. Good luck!

I had a lot of itchiness the first 3 weeks on Lamictal, but not since then. My tongue is sore, but I have no idea whether or not Lamictal is to blame. But the tongue thing isn't terrible.

You know, Lamictal did weird things to my mouth, too. It wasn't the gums, it was the teeth. I kept getting sharp shooting pains in different teeth. It would last a few hours then move to a different tooth. And then it settled in my bottom teeth and jaw and wouldn't go away. It took a couple of weeks after quitting it for it to go away.

It's scary to insist on something from your doc, I know. It's like they have the power of life and death (yours) in their hands and you can't risk upsetting or offending them or having think you are just being cranky or whiny. You are scared to "cry wolf."

If Lamictal was intolerable before, why would it be different now?

Marsha
