Thyroid results really confused - need advice

Posted by denise1966 on October 4, 2005, at 13:10:27

Hi,

As my Paxil no longer seems to be working very well I was thinking about asking the Psychiatrist in about a months time to either change it or add something.

As some people have had good experiences with T3 I was thinking of asking him or her to add that. It's going to be really difficult though as I'm in the UK.

Anyway, I thought I'd better check my last results to see what they were and they are as follows:-

Free T3 4.8 pmoL/L and Free T4 11.6 pmol/L

So I have a high T3 already and a low T4. Is this significant?

I've checked all the sites and am getting more and more confused as they all seem to use different units. Eg one site says the normal range for FT3 and FT4 is 4 to 8 pmoI/L and 10 to 25 pmoI/L respectively.

Another site says that normal T4 is 0.7 to 2.0 and T3 is 2.3 to 4.2.

And then another site says the optimal range for T4 is 7.5 to 8.1 and T3 is 120 to 124. So I'm well and truly confused.

Can somebody please advise what the optimal range is for FT3 and FT4, if there is any significance in having a high FT3 and a low FT4 and would it harm somebody with my results to take extra T3?

I'd be really grateful for some help with this as I'm getting frustrated and am having problems taking things in as it is?

Thanks......Denise

Why is it so difficult to get prescribed things in the Uk? Are the NHS trying to save on prescribing costs or something?? So we have to suffer unnessescarily??

Different labs use different levels to indicate what is normal range. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi Phillipa,

I know that different labs use different measures, I'm hoping that somebody on this board can explain mine to me. Otherwise I'm going to have to spend the rest of the day trying to figure it out myself.

The standards for "normal" thyroid levels have changed over the years but some labs haven't changed their standards accordingly. As taken from http://www.nydailynews.com/city_life/health/v-pfriendly/story/352542p-300594c.html

Until recently, most labs considered a TSH of up to 5.5 to be normal. Guidelines from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists now recommend that the TSH level be lowered to 3.0 at its upper limit. The National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry has issued new practice guidelines recommending a normal TSH of between 0.4 and 2.5. These changes indicate that a normal thyroid should function at a faster rate than the old upper limits suggest. Ninety-five percent of all adults with normal thyroid function have a TSH of between 0.4 and 2.5. This means that for some people, what was once considered normal thyroid function is now considered sluggish. The TSH range I advocate is 0.3 to 3.0. This is based upon a number of studies and an expert consensus

Sounds like you're in the medical field. My last thyroid TSH was 3.3. It was in the range of l-2 before. Could this be a contributing factor in my increased anxiety? And when it originally surfaced I was dx'd with Hashimotos Thyroiditis. My TSH was 22. And I was jumping out of my skin with anxiety. I was told that I would always need benzos as I have been on them for over thirty years and that I would probably need to increase them and I have had to do this. Fondly, Phillipa

No, I'm not in the medical field. I should have made it clearer that I was just quoting the medical column I linked to.

Thanks SFY (nm)
