Early morning waking in atypical depression

Posted by FredPotter on September 22, 2005, at 17:01:17

I have atypical depression. In respect of sleep this means sleeping a lot rather than insomnia. But since changing from Celexa to Paxil I've started waking at 4 or 5 am, not in a disturbed state, but feeling more serene than at any other time during the day.

Does anyone know how the serum concentrations work? Does the Celexa concentration come down faster than the Paxil concentration goes up? This would account for the emergence of a typical depression symptom in an otherwise typically atypical depressive patient. God it gets complicated

I don't know abt serum concentrations--is that like half-life? I know that Paxil has a short one.

But also, paxil can be a very sedating SSRI. That may have contrinuted in part to your excessive sleeping. I know that (back in the good old days) when I was just on 50 mg of paxil, it made me sleep 12 hrs/day. We had to add Wellbutrin to counter-act that s/e.

EE

Emily, that's a lot. I could only tolerate l0mg. And when I tried 20mg it made me hyper not tired. And this was with added xanax. Fondly, Phillipa

I just re-read my post. I didn't mean to say that 50mg was a little bit of paxil (I know it's a lot--I have a high tolerance for meds). I meant that it was my only med at the time. Sigh, I miss those 1-pill-per-day times.

That's funny though that it made you more hyper and me more tired. meds are wacky, huh?

Best,
EE

Do you take the Paxil in the morning or evening?
