Had Thyroid checked a while ago

Posted by MoparFan91 on September 11, 2005, at 15:51:40

I'm 21 years old male and have Bipolar-NOS ultra rapid cycling.

Earlier this year, I saw a doctor who practices integrative medicine, and she did a super panel test that tested my thyroid. It tested my T4, T3, and TSH levels.

The results were the following. I can't remember the exact numbers, though but I can remember the ranges:

T4: High end of normal range
T3: High end of normal range

T4 to T3 conversion was fine

TSH: 2.13

Now, on to the TSH. I read somewhere on here and on another site that any TSH above 2.0 basically means that your thyroid gland is going bad according to very recent research by experts. I also read that people feel best at TSH 1.0 especially those with mood disorders.

Any truth to these?

Should I start asking my doctor about Thyroid replacement hormones?

Overall, are there any concerns and worries about those aformentioned test results?

In my completely unprofessional opinion:

Your thyroid is fine.

I have no idea how to answer your question, but if what you wrote is correct (about TSH needing to be near a 1) than I am concerned as well.

I have a goiter and my recent TSH showed a 2.05.

Maybe SLS or Ed can answer this better??

Spriggy let me try. All labs have slightly different values. The last time I was checked my TSH was 2.23 and the lab shows normal range between .35 and 5.5. Now you have me concerned also as my anxiety/depression is worse and those results were from last December. Is there a site that shows normal values? Have they changed? The medical profession keeps changing labs now a blood pressure of under l20/80 is normal and anything over that is heading toward hypertension. Same with cholesterol. Used to be anything under 220 was normal now at 2l7 I'm considered borderling high. Fondly, Phillipa

A TSH if 1-2 is normal for people with no thyroid disease. Many endocrinologists now target 1-2 for people with thyroid disease. I really think the vast majority of people don't get symptoms unless they are above (usually significantly above) 2.0. For example, I had symptoms but my TSH was 6.5. I really don't think it is worth going from 2 to 1, and it could definitely be harmful if you become hyperthyroid. If you have a goiter and normal TSH you could be in the early stages of hypothyroidism, meaning that at some point in the future you could become hypothyroid.

The data show that people with normal TSH do not benefit from thyroid supplementation. There are exceptions to this, such as in the case of central hypothyroidism, but I think it is best to look at the tests and your doctor's advice and if the consensus is that you don't have hypothyroidism, to move on and look for the real cause of your problems.

What I do know is the first time I was ever hospitalized my TSH was 22. My anxiety was off the charts. Synthroid was adjusted up. And I leveled off. But I was told that I would either need more or less of an antianxiety med for the rest of my life. Fondly, Phillipa

I don't have a goiter. The doctor I saw at the time checked and didn't find one.
