What is a Psychotic Thought?

Posted by rjlockhart98 on August 8, 2005, at 19:27:34

ok,

The other day i was driving back from Colorado for some wedding for my stepbrother.

I looked at the mouintains and measured each one for one person in their personalites.

I realized what the hell i was thinking, and had a panic attack.

Is this a psychotic thought?

I stressed the rest of what happened and started thinking i was going to start comparing the clouds, i said "just dont look at them".

Please tell me what is a psychotic thought.

I thought of it symbolicly to people.

I am really to the point to do anything to get a scan. Go to doctor doctor doctor.

Am i going Crazy?

Matt, a psychotic thought is something you see that is not real to other people or something you see that is not real to other people. TV talking to you, think a tree is a person. Things like this. A scan won't tell your doc any of those things. They go by your actions and what you tell them. Fondly, Phillipa

If I told you, I'd have to kill you.

I think you might want to rephrase that. It almost sounds like a threat. I'm sure you're only kidding. Fondly, Phillipa

Matt of course that's not psychotic. Looking at mountains as if they are people and assessing their personalities is imagination.

Are there such things as psychotic thoughts? I can't think of any. There are psychotic beliefs, and maybe a belief is a thought(?).

When I was at uni this bloke sat in my room and lucidly explained how the government of the People's Republic of China had implanted electrodes into his head to monitor his thoughts which were therefore of the greatest importance because they were the theatre wherein was decided the fate of the world. That was clear enough.

I think it is good for us to have a relaxed and tolerant view of the normal weirdness that goes on in our heads.

I think there is some comfort to being able to view ourselves as psychotic (or anything else?), although it beats me why this should be so. Maybe we like to believe we are more substantial than we really are and labels help.

Sounds to me that you have developed a fear of going crazy. You seem hypervigilant for anything that supports your idea that you are crazy and when you find something that slightly supports your idea you panic. I think this is called phrenophobia and from my breif research seems common in panic disorder.

> Is this a psychotic thought?

I would agree with declan that this is your imagination and creativity at play. For me a pyschotic thought is a beleif of something off the wall (eg electricity pylons mark out witches hexes) that I beleive to be true and usually of great importance and that I dont recocognize as off the wall. Another example of psychotics thoughts for me is thought insertion where I get thoughts that do not originate from me in my head, they can be ESP, messages from the TV, again they are entirely real. If I got one and thought "hey up thats psychotic" then it would no longer be a psychotic thought. It would be something else, maybe just a weird thought or something!

> Am i going Crazy?

Crazy is such a loaded word. One school of thought goes if you think your crazy your not. And that probably applies to you, your not psychotic crazy I think your very very anxious. Coversely people also say if you feel crazy you are. You certainly say you feel crazy so who is anyone to say whether thats 'actual craziness' or not, theres no denying the significance of what you feel.

Best regards, Buns

I just wanted to add also that one psychotic thought doesnt make up a psychotic disorder (or 'crazy person') anyways. I think everyone must have some little bits of psychosis now and again just like everyone sometimes gets really down depressed or a bit manic. For any of these things to be a mental illness they have to be a pervasive and intrusive pattern of behaviour. Buns

Hi Matt,

The thoughts that you had were not psychotic-
they're metaphoric thinking- you were having a creative moment. People that write or do other artwork always try to think like that. Maybe you should write poetry or stories.

BTW Seamus-(i hope that i spelled your name correctly) wrote a very good example of a psychotic thought.

Take care,
kerria
